There is no one BEST program for everyone! Each person's individual computer usage is completely different. Some folks download illegal programs and music, which exposes them to more infections than any other behavior. Some folks only read their email and do some light surfing.



Because usage is different, the appropriate software is different for everyone.



Here is a list of free programs that do their job well, for various security tasks. Most of the time, several programs are necessary to maintain a full range of security/protection against viruses, trojans, worms, etc.

ANTI-SPYWARE:

Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100 percent accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need *at least* two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.

If it's not a firewall, freeware Security is USELESS...



If you want to go the "freeware" route, go to the actual website that distributes it. Downloading from another site is almost a 100% guarantee that you just installed some malware - the program is likely cracked, so anything can be inserted into and you'd never know.



That being said...I know, from personal experience, or that of persons I know, that the following programs are highly recommended: Norton 360, ca Internet Security 2009, and Sunbelt Systems. Panda's suite is supposed to be decent as well. AVG's *paid* for version is also supposed to be very good, and Kaspersy's programs are also excellent - but considering the fact their own computers were recently hacked and the Customer Files accessed...

It's amazing to me the ammount of people who will go out and spend big bucks on a computer but won't spend the bucks to keep it safe and running right.



The guy above me is right out lying to you about AVG free. It's the sorriest AV on the net. Millions of people download it everyday. Millions of people post for help here on answers when there computer becomes hopelessly infected because AVG didn't do what it was suppose to.



AVG is a worthless piece of crap ware that will not detect most Trojan Malware. And if it does it can't do anything with it. It has no root kit protection' Over half the time it can't delete what it finds or stop it from infecting your computer even more. It has no real time protection. It will not protect your computer from any of these.

AVG free has none of this. Avg has to be manually updated and it's a pain in the butt to update. AVG free does not have identity protection. It does not scan in the back round. It has no real time protection. It can't scan in the back round without it.



If you want protection that really works your gonna have to pay for it. Stay away from free versions. They have security holes in them or they wouldn't be free.





Another piece of free advise. Be careful who you listen to on here. This place hasn't been the same since the inmates started running the asylum. There are to many hackers and virus writers here and they will give you screwed up information.



When someone gives you info on here you research it yourself. Don't just take there word. That way you will figure out who to listen to and who to not.
