The symptoms you describe seem

like it is a member of the Anti Virus Soft family.

start the computer in safe mode with net working.

open internet explorer.

click on the Tools menu and then select Internet Options

Now click on the Connections tab

Now click on the Lan Settings button

Under the Proxy Server section,

uncheck the checkbox labeled Use a proxy server for your LAN.

Then press the OK button to close this screen.

Then press the OK button to close the Internet Options screen.

Now that you have disabled the proxy server

you should be able to browse the web again with Internet Explorer.

COME BACK TO HERE (on the infected computer).

the .exe file associations are going to be destroyed so

download this first you will need it later.

Fix .exe : http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/reg/antivirus-vista-2010/FixExe.reg

Now

get malwarebytes here,

this is a direct download link

so you should have no trouble getting it.

click on this link ↓ and then select run.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/affiliates/2-spyware/mbam-setup.exe

INSTALL IT TO YOUR DESKTOP, update it,

then run a full scan and remove everything it finds.

Now run the Fix .exe you downloaded earlier.

Now do this online scan.

to make sure you have nothing else hiding away.

preferably still in safe mode with networking.

Calm down. First of all, what you have is a Rogue Anti Virus. They are annoying and often times hard to remove. 2nd, Mcafee sucks. If you paid for it, I suggest you drop them and buy Avast! Internet Security. Just go to the site and check out all the 12 plus online and offline Shields and other features. Its unbeliveable and light on resources.

Now for removal.

Download these

Malwarebytes

Avast Free Anti Virus

Spybot Search & Destroy

Spybot is all free and the other two are trials but are basically the same as the paid versions.

If this "virus" wont let you download or run these, just restart your pc in safe mode with networking. Press F8 as soon as your pc starts to power up. press it over and over. May take a few restarts.

Update the programs, then run each one one by one. This should clear the problem. If you have enough ram, enable Malwarebytes protection module if you paid for it, and also enable Spybots "TeaTimer". TeaTimer protects your registry. Your registry is basically critical system files and settings, like windows system 32. (What most infections attack to gain control over your pc)

This is a powerful combo I personally use (all paid versions of course) and I put it on all my friends computers when there messed up.

This will clear your problem up and keep you safe. Update regularly by the way.

EDIT

First off, that "Erin" user is a spamer, working for Norton, one of the shitiest programs around. I have seen her everywhere,

2nd, to the "IT Technician" Why would he go do that? I HIGHLY recomend you do not go take it in, you can do this yourself, and its not that hard. You will just be paying out your *** and most places like Best Buy and stuff suck. Always bad reviews.

To the guy who said, resotre, I also dont recomend that, sometimes that wont work, and you will lose alot of work. And it for people who do not know what to do or talking about. Its unnecessary.

Step 1

As soon as you suspect that your computer has a virus, remove your computer from any networks it might be on, as well as from the Internet, so that you don't inadvertently spread the bug to others. Unplug your network cable if you have to.

Step 2

If you have virus-scanning (anti-virus) software installed, run it.

Step 3

If you don't have anti-virus software, you'll need to obtain some. If you can't get it from a network administrator or download it from an uninfected computer, you can mail-order it from a retailer.

Step 4

Start your computer (still not connected to a network) and follow the instructions that came with the anti-virus software.

Step 5

Keep running the virus-scanning software until your computer comes up clean.

Step 6

Reconnect your computer to the Internet and check with the anti-virus software's publisher to make sure you have the latest updates. If not, download them now.

Step 7

After updating the anti-virus software, run it again until your computer comes up clean.

what actually is happning with ur system, is your all programs are disable or only some of them. can you make any installtion or not.

if you can not open any folder file or program then formating is the best option so that you can install a fresh copy of os. also first try to open the task manger by ctrl+alt+del and go to processes tab , see the ieexplore.exe or your maccafe exe file there, once get , end those process, perhaps you will be able to execute the other programs now.

if you can install the programs , then what.....

unintall the macfe and install a good ativurs

Hello Sarah,

Yesterday I had to get rid of a similar virus which acts like a genuine Anti-Virus to scam you into buying it. It's quite difficult to get rid of and Megavideo is a site that has been known to carry pop ups which infect your computer.

You will need to take it to a IT store to get this sorted out, it may cost you a little as this virus is very tricky to get rid of.

REMOVING MALWARE/VIRUSES/SPYWARE:

Download and install the free version of Malwarebtyes anti-malware its a very effective malware remover, once installed update it and run a quick scan, remove anything it finds, your computer should now be clean.

http://www.malwarebytes.com

If you downloaded but are unable to install Malwarebytes its likely the malware on your computer is blocking it in some way, try renaming mbam.exe to a random string of letters or numbers as the malware may be designed to block mbam.exe.

If you are still unable to install or download Malwarebytes try Hitman Pro its far less likely to be blocked, it scans with five different anti-virus engines at once, simply activate the 30 day free trial then once you PC has been cleaned remove it.

if you are unable to get to either of the websites please email me for advanced instructions on how to check your "hosts" file and device manager for malware.

http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro

If you haven't got real-time anti-virus software installed on your PC id recommend installing Avast, its free and as effective as paid for software, after installing crank the heuristics protection up to the max and tick scan for PUPs under the web and file shield expert settings for maximum protection.
