So while I was online, my computer shut down by itself. Now, a little red circle with a white X appears in my toolbar, telling me I have spyware and Windows will download softward to fix it if I click on it. I ran Spybot search and destroy, but it still comes up. When I click on it, it says it's downloading, but when it gets to the end of the download my anti-virus software (avg) tells me "a threat has been detected". What can I do? The icon on my tool bar pops up with it's spyware detected message every 30 seconds or so.

What toolbar are you talking about? Most toolbars are useless or they contain spyware. The only one I recommend is the google toolbar. I would just remove the rest you have.

If Spybot Search & Destroy isn't removing your threat, you might consider scanning with Lavsoft Ad-Aware. You can get it for free from download.com

Another anti-spyware you could get is Windows Defender from microsoft.com

If AVG can't remove the threat, Threatfire might do the trick. http://www.threatfire.com/

PS: Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Windows Defender should not be used at the same time because it may cause problems with the scanning, but you can use Threatfire and AVG at the same time without any problems.

HOW TO REMOVE FAKE SOFTWARE, TROJANS AND VIRUSES:

Download, update and scan your computer with Malwarebytes and SuperantiSpyware, delete what ever they find, if this fails to completely remove the infection download then update Avast and run a boot scan (click schedule boot-time scan and restart your PC), all the software below is completely free and safe to use.

If your infection is proving hard to remove run SmitfraudFix following the guide below.

Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

SuperantiSpyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/

Avast Anti-Virus: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

SmitfraudFix: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.exe

To protect your PC in the future you need to use anti-virus software and a firewall, id recommend using Avast and Comodo Pro firewall both are very effective and completely free, you should also switch to Firefox 3 if you are browsing with IE as its much safer. (links on my profile)
