I just bought AVG full version for 50 bucks from wal-mart, and I'm not sure if i should install the firewall that comes with it, because It will disable my current Windows XP firewall. Which one is better?

Use both, thus creating a double mirrored firewall effect...Thus makes it where if someine can get through one the second is enforced and anything shot at your system, will be dumped right back into the senders computer, without the sender knowing from 3-5 days...

You are not getting good advice. Perhaps they do not realize you have purchased AVG Internet Security and think you just got the anti-virus. You never want more than one firewall. The Windows Firewall that is part of XP is not very good at all partly because it only protects one way and not out going traffic. So the AVG Firewall would be better. But even AVG's firewall is not the greatest.

Now as far as AVG Internet Security itself, it is not one of the top 5 commercial security suites available. There are better ones. If you have not opened it yet, you might want to do some more research into security suites if that is what you want. Here is one website to start with that rates the top security suites. http://internet-security-suite-review.toptenreviews.com/ And for the full review: http://internet-security-suite-review.toptenreviews.com/avg-internet-security-review.html

You probably want to read more reviews than just this but this is like I said a good place to start. Again contrary to what a couple others have said you never want more than one firewall or anti-virus with real time protection.

Only use ONE firewall. Both the AVG and Windows firewall are very weak, see these respected test results:

Comodo is a very popular free firewall but a PITA to use and Comodo is engaging in some dubious activities. Online Armor is much more user-friendly but if you're not very experienced with firewalls I'd suggest the free version of Outpost as it provides very good protection and asks very few questions of you.

3rd party firewalls generally have more options but can also be a larger hassle as you may have to set permissions for a variety of programs and protocols. I personally just stick with the firewall included with xp/vista because it is integrated, unlike a 3rd party firewall such as AVG.

If you are running a server or something then a 3rd party firewall may be necessary to aid in logging traffic etc. If you are not running a server I do not really see a reason for a 3rd party firewall. Besides, if you were running a server I would recommend a hardware firewall not a software one.

first point is don't listen to people who say you should run two firewalls.that's stupid.they will conflict and cause problems.there is no point in that.im not sure about the avg firewall but i use kaspersky which has its own two way firewall.i disabled windows firewall before i installed kaspersky because that was recommended.if avg paid has its own firewall then disable the windows firewall.you do not need two firewalls.

In a nutshell, you should. If it was vista, the firewall is more effective and this would require more careful thought. Avg is a reputable program, and the firewall is likely to more effective the xp one which many viruses can circumvent. Generally I recommend to people to use a firewall and check it's allowable programs periodically.

Good luck

Online Armor Free is very strong (not as strong as the commercial Online Armor, but still *much* stronger than both AVG's firewall and the Windows firewall). Have a look at the latest matousec.com test results: http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge/results.php (firewall tests).

EDIT:

*.toptenreviews.com is not the best source for reviews/comparisons; reportedly they are biased toward paying affiliates.

I use the free Comodo Internet Security firewall along with the Windows firewall and there is no conflict.

Install AVG firewall because it's better than windows firewall and disable windows firewall. Two or more firewalls running at the same time can conflict with each other.you can find more information about firewall here :

install your entire AVG Pro Version but make sure you disable your windows xp firewall first ( to avoid conflict) then when install is complete

reactivate your windows xp firewall ...both is always good. but you have to make sure it is off for the install or you will have a problem.

The on button would be the main guard. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, it way selection reckoning on the type you have your firewall settings set up. you will see that there are tabs that say "exceptions", and "progressed" to boot. in case you pick the "on" button, the firewall will certainly attempt to dam any software from gaining access to the internet and/or a software and/or laptop from over the internet from gaining access to your laptop. it could provide you a instantaneous that permit you be attentive to what is going on and it ought to have what's recommends chosen, yet you could exchange it in case you like. in case you pick. to allow a software directly to get entry to the internet or have one get entry to your laptop, than it ought to without delay be further to the "exceptions" tab. it relatively is that in case you pick the "consistently enable" option from the instantaneous interior the dwelling house windows firewall. you additionally can manually upload courses or pcs to the exceptions tab without dealing with all of that instantaneous enterprise. in basic terms bypass to "exceptions" and choose "upload software". Than make a call from the checklist and supply the quantity of your exception and there ya bypass! you could decide. to have the firewall to "off" yet once you acquire from the internet, you are going to be an uncomplicated purpose for an outbreak or worste... undercover agent ware! So if I have been you and enjoyed having first rate overall performance out of your device i'd have the firewall on and perhaps some different secure practices measures. i desire this facilitates and in case you pick greater secure practices help, deliver me an e mail and that i'd be greater advantageous than chuffed to bypass on some know-how and help. night

Use both...Windows firewall is compatible with any other antivirus. Except if you have windows defender then the windows defender otherwise it clash with your AVG
