Is it safe to name my computer after the serial number?

Question

I have a small/side business which is not large enough to justify hiring a real IT consultant. So I am asking here. I bought 3 of the same thinkpads from Lenovo so my laptops I guess all have the same defualt name, and I get a error pop up sometimes from Windows.

Will it make my computer vulnerable if I change their offical names to their Serial Numbers? That way the will always be unique. I don't think there is much one can do with my serial number.

ps. I was told not to name them after the OS it Windows7-1 Windows7-2, etc bc hackers will know what methods to use to hack.

So serial numbers should be safe?

serial numbers (off the bottom of them yes)

but not the windows 7 serial numbers

(just the hardware serial number) :)

personally i would not use there serial numbers you can name a computer any thing you like if you are going to use passwords don't use names or pet names use obscure names using lower and higher case letters also use numbers ie forMALLy 284598 it makes it harder to crack but if some one really wants to get into a computer there are unfortunately some dedicated software to do it on the net also to tighten up security look up on google or youtube on how to turn of remote access to a pc and how to turn of remote file and printer sharing at the end of the day your best friends for this type of info is youtube or google good luck ps BE NICE HELP SOME ONE

As a matter of practicality I'd say no.

If the occasion arises where one machine has to be identified quickly, long drawn-out numerical identities would be time consuming read and verify.

Have an internal reference to what the unit is used for, or who would be using it, or what room it's in...something to distinguish it from the others, yet still be obscure to any outsiders.

Normally you use the department name or location such as floor as a reference. Since you have so few systems just abbreviate your company name followed by numbers 1-3.
