Question:
Privacy Online, does proxy servers help?
?

If I do not use a proxy server at all, how easy is it to find out what internet sites I'd been visiting - what would somebody have to do to find out?

How hard or easy would it be to find out what sites I'd been visiting if I used a proxy server in my own country or elsewhere?

What if I added Firefox TLS or SSL encryption to that, how does this play in?

(I am not doing anything suspicious at all, but I am shocked by the "Big Brother" society we all find ourselves in... I have developed an interest in whether it's possible to remain completely anonymous online and still have a good online experience )

Ok, I'm going to have to clear up a few things:

1. Proxies do not hide you very well. For a long time, I had an applet on my site that would show your public IP regardless of proxy use. It was originally a proof of concept for breaking Tor, but it works with almost everything. Thinking about putting it back up.

2. If you allow javascript, any site can see your entire history. This is a known flaw with numerous browsers.

3. SSL and TLS give almost no protection from anything. The implementation is a joke, and certificates can be forged rather easily with the right resources and a weeks time. Not to mention, they only "protect" the session between the browser and web server. I have never had a problem bypassing SSL by attacking the browser or OS directly.

A proxy server does very little to promote anonymity. Either way, your ISP still knows what you are doing, as does anybody on your LAN, and if you have cable, anybody in your neighborhood. The most it can do in most cases is strip a bit of scripting or some headers.

(a computer system or an application program) that acts as a go-between for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server. The proxy server evaluates the request according to its filtering rules. For example, it may filter traffic by IP address or protocol. If the request is validated by the filter, the proxy provides the resource by connecting to the relevant server and requesting the service on behalf of the client. A proxy server may optionally alter the client's request or the server's response, and sometimes it may serve the request without contacting the specified server. In this case, it 'caches' responses from the remote server, and returns subsequent requests for the same content directly.
