Why does my anti virus software say " databases are obsolete"?

I have KASPERSKY anti-virus with about 4 months left before it expires. I keep getting a pop-up saying the "databases are obsolete please update now". The pop-up appears authentic because when I open my account, it tells me my computer is protected and the latest scans show no viruses or Trojans. I tried to update the databases but It keeps telling me to update. I have an ACER Laptop and am running Internet Explorer 9 if that matters any. Thanks for any info.

Try this:

Firstly, boot your computer to the Safe Mode menu screen. You do this by repeatedly pressing F8 as soon as you boot up. Once there, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking. Continue to boot from there, by pressing Enter.

Once at your desktop, try getting updates for your Kaspersky. You may have more luck in Safe Mode. After this, it may behave itself.

Hope this helps.

There are malwares that can wreak havoc on AV programs. Take these steps to rule out malware.

1. Run rkill, no need to install, just download to the desktop, and double click the icon. Read the description, not much to read. If Kaspersky tries to stop it from running, allow it, it's safe. Delete it when done, you can't update it:

2. After rkill has run successfully, install, and run a full scan with MBAM, it's free:

After the MBAM scan is done, and you deleted anything it found, update, and run a full scan with Kaspersky.

If the problem still persists, then contact Kaspersky support:

you probably have a license key that has been used by many other people and Kaspersky identifies you as a software pirate that's why they don't allow you to update the virus databases.

You should send them a letter as well as your license purchase receipt and full name so they can see that you're not a pirate. Then they will authorize your downloads.

It's weird tho, it has never happened to me and I've been using it for 2 years now.
