Question:
help!!! how do i uninstall antivirus 2009?!?
2008-11-09 15:34:04 UTC
Okay, I downloaded the free version of Antivirus 2009, and I didn't register it because I realized I had to pay for it. I knew it would be harmful if I left it unregistered on my computer so i went to All Programs and hit Uninstall under the Antivirus 2009 tab. It didn't work, and my computer is telling me that I still have it downloaded on my computer. I have Windows XP 2003 software, and my laptop is a Dell Vostro, if that helps. Please tell me how i can get rid of it!

Antivirus 2009 is an unwanted program, from the authors of Antivirus 2008 . These applications have resembling interface and "features". After stealth installation, Antivirus 2009 will show tonns of fake spyware\adware detection messages and offers to remove reported threats (after you purchase commercial version). But in real Antivirus 2009 is not a spyware cleaner, it's just an imitation of spyware remover. Antivirus 2009 can also slow your computer and cause system errors and crashes. Remove Antivirus 2009 using manual removal instructions (for advanced users) or removal tool. ----- use manual removal instructions

First get some powerful protection for your computer. Some very good, free anti-viruses available to download are:

1) AVG 8 AntiVirus. Easiest interface to use, very fast scanning and doesn't lag your computer at all. Only has a 76% detection rate, but catches the most harmful of viruses. If you're a normal home user, you're not in too much danger of higher level viruses and this is the AV for you:

http://www.free.grisoft.com

2) Avast! 4 AntiVirus. Smaller, sleeker skin, average scanning speed, but reports alot of safe files as viruses, so you might need to watch out for that. 78% detection rate, but alot more complicated than most other free AVs. Use this if you are handy with a computer and you know what needs to be scanned:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

3) Avira AntiVirus. Simple layout, which even the most basic of users can navigate. Incredibly fast scanning, with a 90% detection rate. Not as easy on the eyes as other AVs, and you need to know what you're doing to get the more advanced features, but it is definite a candidate:

Personally I use AVG, but only because I go for the easier interface. If you are paranoid about viruses then the only real option is Avira. But if you just want normal protection, then any of the three will do it for you.

For any spyware problems, get SpyBot - Search and Destroy:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

And for protecting your computer for malware or tracking cookies, use Ad-Aware 2008 Free Edition:

http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

All of them are free, as powerful as paid programs, like McAfee and Norton (which only has an 18% detection rate!), and don't use up as many resources.

Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

Hope that helps.

Most commercial AV's do the same, like Panda, Norton & McAfee I've spent long hours getting rid of them in friend's pcs. Try its program group, you might see an uninstall link there. If if doesn't work either, your last resort is deleting all its folders and then you MUST delete all its entries in the Registry, but ONLY if you know what you're doing. editing a single registry thing in the wrong way can totally freeze your pc. So if you're not really sure how to go about this, ask someone who knows. One it's done properly, no trace of your AV 2009 will be left.

Note: do NOT delete folders if you're not going to delete registry entries!!!

If you DO get rid of it, next time try AVAST (the very best and 100% free)

Oh that one sucks. I never could get rid of it. I had to reinstall windows. I would delete it and then it would come back as soon as I restarted. The yahoo toolbar virus scan detected it.
