Malware is programming or files that are developed for the purpose of doing harm. Thus, malware includes computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware, hijackers, and certain type of adware.

1. Virus - A program that when run, has the ability to self-replicate by infecting other programs and files on your computer. These programs can have many effects ranging from wiping your hard drive, displaying a joke in a small box, or doing nothing at all except to replicate itself. These types of infections tend to be localized to your computer and not have the ability to spread to another computer on their own. The word virus has incorrectly become a general term that encompasses trojans, worms, and viruses.

2. Spyware - A program that monitors your activity or information on your computer and sends that information to a remote computer without your knowledge.

3. Adware - A program that generates popups on your computer or displays advertisements. It is important to note that not all adware programs are necessarily considered malware. There are many legitimate programs that are given for free that display ads in their programs in order to generate revenue. As long as this information is provided up front then they are generally not considered malware.

a. Use a good free antivirus like Avast or Avira AntiVir.

b. Use an antispyware, spybot s&d and superantispyware.

c. Use antimalware, malwarebytes.

The more ominous the warning, the more dangerous the product is than what it claims to protect. You've got a rogue software (meaning that's its bogus). You need to get rid of it ASAP -- not follow what it tells you to do. You have 2 choices -- format your computer and start anew. This is the hassle free way. The second method is to attempt to clean it out using: 1. Malwarebytes anti malware 2. Spybot SD 3. Trend Micro's HijackThis 4. An ISO image of Kaspersky's Rescue Disk 2008, which you need to burn to a CD using a program such as IMGburn. To use it, you boot of this disk during startup and it will perform a virus sweep inside a Linux environment.

If your computer has been accessing the Internet unprotected it is infected.

Spyware has surpassed viruses as the #1 threat to identity theft and without protection your Internet activities are never private.

To get rid of spyware and keep your computer clean you can use an antispyware or even more.

I had the same problem. i tried a bunch of free adware programs but eventually had to buy one.

I went with the NoAdware program. I tried their free trial and then ended up getting it. It's only $40 and worked above and beyond my expectations. you can check it out here.

AVG Antivirus is great - it's free, and quiet. It isn't anywhere as annoying as Norton, but has better protection. Norton is terrible. Whatever you do, DON'T get that. I've seen countless computers infected with Norton on them *shudder*

I would say anything except McAfee and Norton. These two applications are memory HOGS.
