I just upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 yesterday. I am taking a networking class and much of the things I am learning there cause me to worry about my security online. I am in need of a good Firewall for Ubuntu.

The things that I require my system to have are a linux Packet Sniffer, Port Scanner and Firewall to keep hackers out of my hard drive.

Linux uses iptables as a default firewall. By default it allows all. Here is a tutorial for it https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo

Some like firestarter etc as they are GUI, but if your doing networking doing raw iptables is always fun.

The default install of Ubutunu though normally is pretty locked down. Run Nmap against it and you won't get much back. But you can use iptables to lock it down completely.

Ubuntu's desktop install provides a bunch of useful software for desktop users, but it doesn't install a firewall by default. Luckily, it's really simple to get a firewall up and running on Ubuntu. If you want a firewall on a machine, you can set one up on your own.

goto the 'buntu forums for advice about the best alternative. the repositories do have firewall choices if you search that term. Your Ubuntu already is running ufw and iptables.
