I guess this is a wide spread problem. It will not allow access to any security sites for updates. I even downloaded a new Norton security suite to no avail. This is the worst I have ever seen. Any ideas?

You have a virus and should get rid of it with an effective virus remover.

You can run Bitdefender's free online scan which doesn't need to be downloaded http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

If you know when you got the virus, you can do a system restore to a time before the virus was on your system. This article tells you how to run it from safe mode http://bertk.mvps.org/html/safemode.html

Your best protection in general is a complete internet security suite such as Bitdefender or Norton internet security 2009.

A collection of free anti virus and/or spyware programs can conflict with each other. Additionally, the suites offer multiple layers of protection so that if one layer fails another can cover for it.

Antivirus 2009 is an unwanted program, from the authors of Antivirus 2008. These applications have resembling interface and "features". After stealth installation, Antivirus 2009 will show tonns of fake spyware\adware detection messages and offers to remove reported threats (after you purchase commercial version). But in real Antivirus 2009 is not a spyware cleaner, it's just an imitation of spyware remover. Antivirus 2009 can also slow your computer and cause system errors and crashes. Remove Antivirus 2009 using manual removal instructions (for advanced users) or removal tool.

Downloader Beware: the wrong way to spend the night is trying to delete malicious trojan infected downloaded programs out of your system--if this is where you got it. [i spent about 4 hours last night uninstalling a downloaded rogue Bitdefender program that i thought was tested and ended up with 8 thousand 500 plus cookies running rampet on my system--which i had to remove manually on a frozen system]. two words: Revo uninstaller. you can download this program from C.Net and remove suspicious programs permanently in your system that you didn't even know you had. unfortunately these so-called free download sites--[game sites, anti-spyware downloads, zwinky's, smiley central, cursor mania etc.] are full of adware and phishing scams that can commando your entire operating system [like mine] into a paralyzed wasteland. some, i think actually put fake trojans and worms into the process to lure in unsuspecting victims. use caution. btw: rebooting your system in safe mode might roll back your machine to a point where it worked properly. if that doesn't work, sorry to say T, your machine is fried. e-mail me. k97.

Spyware Doctor will remove the problem. You can get a copy of it at http://spyware-and-adware.com/tutorialthree.aspx plus a tutorial on how to use it. Be sure to disable Norton temporarily if you run Spyware Doctor, you can't use them both at the same time, they will conflict with each other.

Personally, I use Panda Antivirus on my home PC and both of my laptops. I have been using it for more than 3 years now with ZERO problems. My personal laptop had a virus a few years back that neither McAfee nor Symantec (Norton) could fix. I tried Panda on a whim and have NEVER looked back and NEVER had a single problem since.
