Someone added me on MSN messenger, and I stupidly accepted because I recognized the guys name. Then he started sending me extremely sexual messages, turns out not the guy I knew. I asked him where he got my email address and he said "limewire". I immediately removed it from my computer and deleted him.

Question: How'd he get it from there?! and what other programs like that can creepy people get my email address from?

Thanks, any info will really really help!

don't even communicate with them. I NEVER answer or open any email from someone I don't know...and if I think I know them and then open it up I take them out of my contacts. If you answer them at all it leads to more communication and you encourage them.

Just delete them from any messenger and any contact and don't accept anything from them.

there are a lot of perves out there and they are looking for other perves and there are plenty of them.

This is a very thorough article on where and how they do it but too much to put here...so go read it..

I'm very disappointed in some of the answers here. The point is that it concerns her, and saying that you can't get "raped over TCP/IP" doesn't help that. She was smart by breaking off contact, but the fact is that some people DO escalate from this type of thing.

OP- make sure you're not on the internet while you check your limewire settings. If you're sharing too many folders, you might have shared your .pst or .eml (if memory serves) files, which can reveal email information. It's not likely, but I've seen it happen.

Also, if it keeps happening, and you've asked him to stop, you can change your username and/or contact the police. There are ways to trace someone through IM, if they feel the need to do so.

For any file sharing programs, just be careful of what you share. As was mentioned previously, also make sure to run regular antivirus and anti-spyware programs to look for any unauthorized software.

Please follow up if you have any other concerns.

The Internet is not a safe place:

*You could of entered your email address to an untrusted website which people can get too easily.

*LimeWire is full of viruses from people putting viruses in the songs you would download, I uninstalled it a couple weeks ago.

*Someone MAY know your IP address

I'm not sure of any other answers sorry, but I hope some of those helped. Tell your parents about it or call the police and tell them the email address you had on MSN, the police can track people down like that via their IP Address and can go to custody for sexual abuse. Let someone know about this immediately.

Most likely the guy is lying about his source, there are ways to hack into lime wire accounts and e-mail accounts, I don't know how but my computers teacher told us. Just keep all of your info off sites that arent trusted. My computers teacher, who by the way is a great guy, told us that if you say as little as what hospital you were born in, that gives the person asking the first three digits in your social security, be careful some freaks will do anything to find out your personal stuff!

I hope that this helps!!

Do you have your real email address in your MSN profile? The one you had to put in when you got your MSN account? People can get it from there. There are many other ways to get a person's email address. If somebody contacts you by email or messenger and you do not like it, do not reply, do not ask them anything. Just block them and that's it.

He just assumed that you had limewire.

Unless your computer has a virus.

(I doubt he got it from there) He probabley just said that because most teens have limewire.

I would report his screenname. He is some old guy looking to rape or get something from a girl or child that is 12-18 years old.

Don't add people you don't know..

He was probabley just typing around until he came across someone that finally accepted him..

hope i helped =]

Do you use Limewire or any file sharing program?

You may also have some sort of Spyware...

Get avast! anti-virus + internet protection (it should be free and it impresses me that it boot-deletes viruses... pretty dam good for a free home program) or some sort of a spy ware remover from the internet.

After registering, some web sites will sell your email out for a whole bunch of crap.

So be careful which sites you sign up at.

anything with as many security loop holes as limewire that involve you submitting your email address.

i suggest making a bogus hotmail one for registering things. thats what i do.

don't go on i.m. for a while. he'll eventually go away. tell your parents, though. they'll know what to do. guys can also email. sometimes, people just play and type in random email addresses and send weird stuff to people to freak them out.

sometimes, people know other people's emails, and they just pass them around. i sent a bunch of my friends a "quiz about me" thing... and they started sending it to a bunch of people that i know, but didn't send it to. i hope he stops i.m.'ing you :)

Call the police and tell them what happened! They will look into it and take it from there...if the guy is a creeper they will lock him up, then you have no worries again.

A note for you:

Since raping over TCP/IP protocol is virtually impossible(except then you are weak minded enough to get mental-raped), why bother?

And if you have entered your address/phone in your email box, you are just plain stupid.
