This is Malware, this stuff hides well, deeply rooting itself in your system and anti-virus scanners won't help and the Restore Point Utility is not a good thing to use against such invasion for this reason too.

UPDATE: You "HAVE" to download all the programs listed on a USB stick from another computer (Internet Café, Public Library or friend's computer) as this malware blocks you from fully downloading the protection. If you still cannot use it, Get a new MBAM exe file but rename it Alteregobytes to confuse the Malware (but be sure to keep the .exe extension on it) and use it for solution A.

Here are solutions (use them in the order stated):

A) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ( http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button ).

Install the application and make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish ( If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version ).

* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan ( The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient ).

* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected ( When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart - The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM ).

B) Try my technique (tricks and free programs I use):

1) The Java Runtime Environment causes issues, you should use a free program I use myself called JavaRa ( http://raproducts.org/javara.html ) to get the latest JRE and remove older versions. This will ensure the security of your computer and extra space on your hard disk. The download link is here: http://raproducts.org/ ( Currently, JavaRa supports Windows Vista without UAC so if you have Vista and are not comfortable temporarily disabling it, don't use JavaRa )

2) Flush every single possible accumulated junk in ALL browsers. As you explore the web, browsers stores information about your browsing. You should delete that information from time to time.

Method One (now): In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then Delete Browsing History and in the box, click the Delete all button (bottom left) and Yes.

In Firefox, go to tools, clear private data, make sure all boxes are checked and then click on the clear private data now button.

Method Two (in the future - about every two weeks for normal use of the internet - every week for heavy use):

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then click Delete Browsing History and in the box that opens, do the following steps (in order)

1) click the button near Temporary Internet Files, click Yes and wait for the box that opens to close.

2) click the button near History, click Yes and wait for the box that opens to close.

Finally, click the close button (bottom right) to finish.

In Firefox, Go to tools, clear private data and uncheck all except Browsing History, Cache and Authenticated Sessions boxes and then click on the clear private data now button.

Note: You should close your browser ( This is good for Internet Explorer and Firefox ) when you're done to clear cookies that are still in memory.

For older versions of the programs or for other browsers, check help files for guidance on doing the cleanup.

3) Turn off the restore point utility ( here is a guide for XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405 and an article for Vista: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/9f6d755a-74bb-4a7d-a625-d762dd8e79e51033.mspx )

4) Install a free cleaner called Glary Utilities ( http://www.glaryutilities.com/gu.html ) to remove junk files and/or remnants of installs (there is always some) and use it in Windows "safe mode" (for a better cleanup job).

5) Defragment your drive with your Disk defragmenter.

6) Turn restore point utility back on. ( the same guide and article given in part 3 )

Make sure you have a GOOD anti-virus scanner (look @ http://www.download.com to get one)

( A word of caution, be sure to read all instructions and help files completely so that you can apply fixes right the first time ! )

That's one of the benefits of using free virus softwar, you get what you pay for. I have tried most of the so called freebies out there and they where more problems then their worth. I have a subscription Security service i have been using for Two years, just one program that takes care of everything as far as security goes it updates automatically and runs every night when iam not using my computer. And notifies me before i get on to a site weather or not there are problems , between that and my registry cleaner my system is virtually automatic and i don't have nothing to worry about. Just make sure when you down load any thing on to your Computer that you shut down all programs running in the background. The Two programs i have been using for the last two years are Windows Live OneCar, you can get a 90 day free trial , The second is RegCure you can down load it for free and it will scan you system but you have to purchase the subscription in order to benefit from it. Between these two programs and an external hard drive for backups i have been problem free for two years without any mishap's

It sounds like a virus or spyware. Did you download AVG free directly from AVG? If not, uninstall and download from AVG.

Download, install, update and scan with the following free:

AVG Free from http://free.avg.com/ - this is an anti-virus, ensure that you only have one anti-virus program installed on your computer

You can have multiple anti-spyware/malware/adware programs to scan, ensure they are legitimate. I suggest the following:

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition from http://www.superantispyware.com or http://www.download.com

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware...

Valid downloads of Malwarebytes only come from these sites:

http://www.download.com

http://www.majorgeeks.com

http://projects.securitywonks.net

Spybot Search & Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org - activate TeaTimer and ensure that you immunize every time you update (Spybot S & D updates on Thursday)

Ad-Aware 2008 Free from http://www.lavasoft.com

CCleaner is a good tool to run once in awhile

Firefox is a much safer browser than IE http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0.5/releasenotes/

If all else fails I suggest you register with the Spybot Search & Destroy Forums and post your problem in the Malware Removal Forum... they are excellent at talking people through the process of cleaning their computers. http://forums.spybot.info/

No, this sounds like a virus rather than AVGs problem.

How long were you without virus protection could be a factor.

Does AVG directly ask you or is it an Error window?

Avg doesn't do that to your computer. I have never had that problem. You are not doing something right. Did you restart your computer after downloading it? If you had a virus did you heal it and then delete it from the vault?

You didn't state what your OS is so here are a few links that will help

It sounds like you have a file association problem

in case you probably did the uninstall during the upload/get rid of, it may desire to have dealt with the situation. attempt arising in risk-free mode and deleting the AVG folder. in case you have the Icon interior the job bar, it nut be opened and disabled before you're able to do an upload/get rid of.
