Windows Defender is anti-spyware only, and a very mediocre anti-spyware at that. It does not remove viruses or most other malware.

For a "real" Anti-Virus......I would suggest Avast, Avast now includes anti-virus, anti-spyware capability and anti-rootkit components. And all for the low low price of free. You can get it here:

Avoid the anti-virus called AVG. It is wildly popular with children and the computer illiterate but has historically had the lowest virus detection rate of all the popular free anti-virus programs.

ESET Online virus scanner:

http://www.eset.com/online-scanner

No need to download anything, it will run the virus scanner within your browser. It is made by the develepers of the popular anti-virus software 'NOD32' and it should pick up most virus' out there.

Malwarebytes Anti-malware

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Free software you need to download. You can then run a thorough scan of your system and it will pick up any virus' remaining on your system.

AVG Antivirus

http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage

AVG is one of the most popular free anti-virus programs around. Its updated frequently, and will pick up most virus'

Avast! Antivirus

http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-down…

Probably the second most popular free anti-virus software after AVG.

Spybot search and destroy

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index…

Its not an anti-virus as such, but its a very useful software to have because it includes alot of various tools for searching and finding spyware, malware etc.

Go to download.cnet.com because they have a whole bunch of free anti-virus software. A really good one is AVG. But if it is really slow try downloading smart defrag. Defragmenting your computer organizes it which ultimately makes it faster.

Get rid of windows defender...it only has a 60% detection rate which is horrible.....uninstall it.....

The above 3 programs are all you need and nothing more.....i have used there for the last 3 years...and they have saved my computer many times from getting serious infections....Avast not only has a Good Web-Shield....but also an inbound/outbound e-mail scanner...which is critical for scanning malicious e-mail..........
