It can slow down your computer.

It might corrupt your system files.

It might make some programs faulty or corrupt.

It might damage your boot sector creating problems when you boot into the windows.

it might steal important information from your computer and send to some other person.

It might change the power ratings of your computer and could blast the system.

It might give you sleepless nights and nightmares if you are able to sleep.

You might wake up in bad mood and that will affect your family and your society.

Plus it undermines the faith of the people over the law and order situation.

A computer virus is a special kind of computer program which:

Spreads across disks and networks by making copies of itself, usually surreptitiously.

Can produce undesired side-effects in computers in which it is active.

How infection occurs

In order to infect a computer, a virus has to have the chance to execute its code.

Viruses usually ensure that this happens by behaving like a parasite, i.e. by modifying another item so that the virus code is executed when the legitimate item is run or opened.

Good vehicles for viruses include the parts of a disk which contain code executed whenever that disk is booted, and documents which contain macros executed whenever that document is opened with the relevant application.

As long as the virus is active on the computer, it can copy itself to other files or disks that are accessed.

Virus side-effects

As well as self-replicating code, a virus normally contains a 'payload'. The former is like the propulsion unit of a missile; the latter is like the warhead it delivers. The payload can be programmed to have malicious side-effects.

These effects can range from harmless messages to data corruption or destruction.

How viruses spread

Infections spread from machine to machine, and from organisation to organisation, in a number of ways.

Viruses can be transmitted by:

Booting a PC from an infected medium.

Executing an infected program.

Opening an infected file.

Common routes for virus infiltration include:

Floppy disks or other media that users can exchange.

Email attachments.

Pirated software.

Shareware.

What is a computer virus?

Computer viruses are small software programs that are designed to spread from one computer to another and to interfere with computer operation.

What do computer viruses do?

Through the course of using the Internet and your computer, you may have come in to contact with computer viruses. Many computer viruses are stopped before they can start, but there is still an ever growing concern as to what do computer viruses do and the list of common computer virus symptoms. A computer virus might corrupt or delete data on your computer, use your email program to spread itself to other computers, or even erase everything on your hard disk.

Computer viruses are often spread by attachments in email messages or instant messaging messages. That is why it is essential that you never open email attachments unless you know who it s from and you are expecting it.

Viruses can be disguised as attachments of funny images, greeting cards, or audio and video files.

Computer viruses also spread through downloads on the Internet. They can be hidden in illicit software or other files or programs you might download.

To help avoid computer viruses, it s essential that you keep your computer current with the latest updates and antivirus tools, stay informed about recent threats, run your computer as a standard user (not as administrator), and that you follow a few basic rules when you surf the Internet, download files, and open attachments.

Once a virus is on your computer, its type or the method it used to get there is not as important as removing it and preventing further infection.

Many people think viruses aren't harmful because they are so "small" you can't even see them. But they are very harmful, they damage you computer and steal you information like bank accounts, credit cards etc... I was infected with a virus once, my computer went haywire, so i bought Symanttec Norton 360 and it took out the virus and still blocks my computer from viruses.

Viruses are usually, a small program code attached with files stored onto the hard disk drive or on primary memory by replicating itself into multiple copies. These viruses can have adverse effect on your PC performance and can even destroy the entire system files. Checkout other harmful effects of viruses:

• Slow down your PC speed

• Can corrupt your stored files

• Damages the boot sector

• Might steal confidential information

• Spamming activities

Computer viruses are programs written by "mean" people. These virus programs are placed into a commonly used program so that program will run the attached virus program as it boots, therefore, it is said that the virus "infects" the executable file or program. Executable files include Macintosh "system files" [such as system extensions, INITs and control panels] and application programs [such as word processing programs and spreadsheet programs.] Viruses work the same ways in Windows or DOS machines by infecting zip or exe files.

A virus is inactive until you execute an infected program or application OR start your computer from a disk that has infected system files. Once a virus is active, it loads into your computer's memory and may save itself to your hard drive or copies itself to applications or system files on disks you use.

Some viruses are programmed specifically to damage the data on your computer by corrupting programs, deleting files, or even erasing your entire hard drive. Many viruses do nothing more than display a message or make sounds / verbal comments at a certain time or a programming event after replicating themselves to be picked up by other users one way or another. Other viruses make your computer's system behave erratically or crash frequently. Sadly many people who have problems or frequent crashes using their computers do not realize that they have a virus and live with the inconveniences.

What Viruses Don't Do!

Computer viruses can not infect write protected disks or infect written documents. Viruses do not infect compressed files, unless the file was infected prior to the compression. [Compressed files are programs or files with its common characters, etc. removed to take up less space on a disk.] Viruses do not infect computer hardware, such as monitors or computer chips; they only infect software.

In addition, Macintosh viruses do not infect DOS / Window computer software and vice versa. For example, the Melissa virus incident of late 1998 and the ILOVEYOU virus of 2000 worked only on Window based machines and could not operate on Macintosh computers.

One further note-> viruses do not necessarily let you know they are present in your machine, even after being destructive. If your computer is not operating properly, it is a good practice to check for viruses with a current "virus checking" program.

I will start with my neighbors. A hacker hacked their computers. H e got their credit card numbers and bank account numbers. He took thousands of dollars out of both their checking accounts. One of them was a computer programmer and he traced the guy. And they were lucky he was from the US. A lawyer was hired and they found their money in the guys account.

The credit cards were used.

I did not know anything about computers when I first got mine. I used it like a type writer.

Spyware and you name it got into it. It more or less controled what I was doing.

Very frustrating, disapointed and mad were the feelings.

I could not go where I always wanted to.

Pop ups. Very large ones.

It controled the turning off.

I installed the security my provider provided and removed most of the things.

I was looking for something that was still in my computer, when the neighbor programmer decided he would help. I told him there was a rat file in the registry. He took the rat file out and upgraded it to pack 3 and put in different security. He had to use a linus or something to keep the hackers out.

My IP number was sold. I still get hackers from all over.

Brutal attacks.

Botnet attacks every day. Thousands of IP numbers being blocked. One today along with the ones from Amsterdam, Milton, Au, other countries, India, Italy, Mexico, China, and all over the US. My firewall keeps them out.

Spam.

Phone calls on home phone and the cell. We pushed the #8 several times to mess up their recordings. And got real hateful with the live people.

Foreign people with heavy accents called with their scams. They try to get the bank numbers and credit card numbers. Their stories were down right insulting to anyones brain.

porn.

I blocked the pop ups.

My security sends the spam to spam.

I send the adverting ones to spam.

I get a lot of adverting in my email.

To society, this is a vicious circle to go through. Their lifes, phones , computers and emails are invaded.

Slowing your computer down amongst many other effects.

Also, spreading the virus to other computers through your internet connection.

To yourself, when your computer is running slow it will probably stress you out as it will take you so much longer to do short tasks.

if you have one i suggest gettgin norton antivirus

It depends on the virus - anything that you can program a computer to do, basically.

Examples are annoying messages, redirecting websites, sending spam emails, altering data, destroying data, stealing passwords and bank details, formatting your hard disk and destroying everything.

viruses can:

freeze your operative system

slow down your pc

lead you to harmful sites

freeze internet explorer and mozilla

crash your os

etc...
