i put in windows xp in and it had a norton 2005 anti virus, i want to put 2006 in but it how do i fix it?

You first remove norton 2005 from add&remove software and installed 2006 it will work.

Have you tried to go to the website, and download the upgrade? That would be the easiest way to do it.
