Is Norton the best anti virus?

I wouldn't say it's best. There are other anti-virus programs which are "equally" good.

The efficiency of an ant-virus program is a function of its robustness and how often you update the program with new virus definitions. If you keep updating regularly with latest signatures and virus definitions, any program is good.

I don't think it's the best, but I do like Norton pretty good. A lot of people discredit Norton because they don't know how to use it. I've seen people still using pre-installed NIS that's been expired for over a year and calling it a POS because their PC is infected. I've seen people click off everything Norton pops up without even reading what it says. I've seen people disable the autostart apps that come with Norton and expect it to protect their computer.

I'm just saying any anti-virus is only as good as how the user manages it.

In my 12 years of professional experience as a Computer/Network/IT technician, I have found that Norton is the absolute worst product on the market. From what I hear, Norton 2010 is much better, but I refuse to give it a chance seeing as how there are much better alternatives.

Norton requires you to buy their product ($50 or $60), then make you pay every year in order to continue receiving updates. After 3 years they stop supporting the old version and you have to go buy it all over again. Money money money. And what do you get in return? Poor virus detection and removal. In product comparisons, Norton consistently scores mediocre at best. They are not the worst, but are far from the best. Why would you trust your precious computer and sensitive information to a product that delivers 2 star performance?

In product comparisons compiled from many different sources, you will find several products which consistently score the highest. Some tests will place one product at #1, some tests will place another at #1, but if you look at many many reviews you will see the same several products always at the top of the list.

Here they are, in order of my personal preference. These are the best.

Avast (my personal favorite)

Microsoft Security Essentials

AVG

Avira

Want to know the best thing that these all have in common, aside from providing 5 star performance? They are all completely, 100% free for life. No paying for the software, no paying for the updates.

Why pay hundreds for a poor product when you can get an excellent product for free?

Avast Home edition is free, but the free version provides the same excellent level of protection that the paid version does. If you use it for commercial purposes (like installing it on your work computer) you will need to pay for it, but it's still cheaper than Norton.

AVG, same as above.

Microsoft Security Essentials is surprisingly good, and completely free for life.

Avira is excellent, the only reason it's at the bottom of my list is that it pops up an advertisement to buy the paid version every time you turn on your computer. People say you can disable it, but I couldn't find the option so I stick with Avast.

You cant say that any anti virus or internet security is best.It depends upon how the anti virus companies gets the latest information about latest viruses. Now in todays world competing anti virus comapanies are AVG,McAfee,Kaspersky,Bitdefeder, norton and eset.Ofcourse free ones like malwarebytes and microsoft are also good enough.

I think norton anti virus is good but not the best. Its detection rate is average but it claims to be the best.It uses lots of memory and cpu.I would better go for Kaspersky or the free ones.

No, nothing is the best. Intelligence and vigilance is the best. Norton is ok, but I always recommend adding Spybot and Malware Bytes to your security packages. Run all of these at least once per month.

There is no best antivirus. Norton is quite good at its detection rate.

Some like it, some don't.

Agggh! ANYTHING from Norton is about the WORST!!! I'm using Comodo AV and firewall, they are free and seem to work great. There is also Avast! antivirus, also completely free. All are very lightweight, update, configure and run easily, and DON'T slow down your system like you just poured molasses into it.

NO NORTON!

Norton straight up blows. I use Trend Micro and it works like a charm.

Depends on what you seek. I personally would not use it, because it slows down the computer like nothing else. Same for McAfee in that respect. If you don't care about that then sure, go for it. If it does matter though, use avast or avg (both have a free version as of to date).
