Question:
How do I keep "virus protectors" out of my computer?
?

I have virus protection. But once in a while something comes into my computer that claims I'm infected with a virus (it is actually the virus) and wants me to BUY something. It blocks my computer from visiting any websites or doing anything. I finally managed to get into the "help and support" part of my computer and do a system restore two days back and the problem went away. But this has happened more than once and I don't want it to happen again. I won't tell you what I'd do to the person who sends this stuff around. Any ideas on how to keep this "virus" out? Or more quickly get it out once it comes in? It all looks very official and wants me to buy something. thanks much

You would want a virus protection that does WEBSITE BLOCKING as well.

Malwarebytes is good at that and usually blocks the sites from displaying in the first place. However, Malwarebytes is a paid protect, but for the sake of about $25 for a life time license (no consistent yearly renewal fees), it's definitely worth it.

I use it and it's definitely worth every cent. Of course I also have the free Microsoft Security Essentials as well.

Hope that helps you out.

AV rogue malware;

Those are commonly installed via a 'drive by' download, which are served up through malicious 3rd party 'advertising', which most people allow through their browser: either IE or Firefox**.

Don't let these parasites into your system in the first place.

Browser "hardening" is now a "must do" end user operation, as 'Net born malware is rampant & ceaseless.

Get Firefox as your default browser & use it for everyday surfing; fall back to IE only for "last resort" viewing of substandard websites & Windows updates.

The following tips help, but methods (vectors) constantly change.

FIREFOX: Tools> Options> Privacy> top drop menu set to "Firefox will use custom settings..."> Check 'Accept Cookies from sites'

►& Un-Check 'Accept 3rd Party cookies'

My own choices (from Mozilla) to bolster Firefox is here:

(►►At least get the #1 item for malware prevention: NoScript, which prevents these 'drive by' and many other exploits)

iE does not have this kind of blocking. Use at your own risk.

"Use Microsoft Security Essentials to guard against viruses, spyware, and other evil software. It provides real-time protection for your home or small business PCs.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free* and we designed it to be simple to install and easy to use. It runs quietly and efficiently in the background so you don't have to worry about interruptions or making updates."
