Avira undoubtedly bcoz it is easy to update , light i.e., system does hang or takes long time to boot up , is efficient as it quickly detects any malware or unwanted programme & removes it automatically , scans full system within a very short period of time , has easy user interface & is free for home use with almost all the features to guard Vs internet threats.............i recomend u this bcoz i my self am using this over last 2 years without any complication ever ........hope it works

Here are the best antivirus programs that are completely free and work similarly to expensive programs from companies like Norton and McAfee. There are no "on-demand only" (without constant virus protection), trial, or shareware antivirus programs in this list.
AVAST - User interface is not the best and is very hard to configure. Very low virus detection.
AVG - The most popular and most marketed free antirivirus online. Very good user-interface and updates daily. Decent virus protection.
Avira - The "underdog" to AVG. Not marketed as much as AVG but on many of the top-rated review sites, Avira is up there in the rankings for virus detection rates and it has a very user-friendly interface.
I would highly recommend Avira. Just because AVG is marketed extremely well doesn't mean it will run well ;)

The best anti-virus is Kaspersky or Norton but they are not free. Kaspersky does offer a free online scan but it doesn't remove what it finds. Second best free are Avast and AVG and others. The Microsoft firewall that comes free with XP and Vista is quite good but unfortunately provides no visibility. If you need visibility, try the free Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is very good but it is difficult for me to say it is the best. The best firewalls are not free. You have phishing filters in Firefox 3 and IE 7 and IE 8 (Smart Screen Filter) and AVG. It's strictly a question of how often the phishing filter database gets updated with accurate information. It's tough to say which is best.

My security suite is MalwareBytes AntiMalware, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and Spybot Search and Desetroy. But you said free, so go with Avast!

Get Malwarebytes. It is very thorough. It works great.
I had Avast!, and it detected 14 infections on my computer, then I had errors galore when I tried to save them to chest. I installed Malwarebytes, and it detected 39, and got rid of them right away, easy as pie.
