If your PC (personal confuser) is misbehaving (POP-UP's; going to weird, unrequested sites; goofy warnings; etc., & apart from removing any malware already installed on your system) you must

TURN OFF 3rd PARTY COOKIES!!

This stops un-requested cookies ( = pop-ups & websites) from being displayed on your machine.

For Internet Explorer: go to Tools> Internet Options> Privacy> Advanced: here check 'Override automatic....'; 'Allow session cookies'; 'Allow 1st party cookies'; & 'Block 3rd Party Cookies'.

For Firefox: go to Tools> Options> Privacy: here UN-CHECK 'Accept 3rd Party cookies'

Opera, et al: not sure, check under 'options' for this.

Then, you'll have to extract malware remnants with Spybot, Ad Aware, and all available trusted cleaners. Good luck.

Antivirus 2009 (or 2008, or Antivirus XP2009 or other names - there are many clones of this rogue software) is a piece of malware that infects your computer and constantly pops up notices that you have an infection and you have to buy or update Antivirus 2009. This is a scam to trick you into paying $30 for some useless software. The malware installed when you downloaded something from the web, sometimes masquerading as a video codec or other useful software. It is persistent, and infects a number of Windows files.

Try running the cleaner programs in Safe Mode (hit the F8 function key as the machine boots up, and choose Safe mode)

If the malware is blocking websites or downloads, you may have to download the removal tools on another computer, and burn them to CD or copy them to a USB Memory stick.
