Every time I boot into windows I get a pop-up window that says "Errors Occurred", then asks me to check the log file, which pops up directly after the window in notepad.

Here is what the log says:

Don't post HijackThis log in here. Trust me, the guy above doesn't even know what to do with the Java programs in Add/Remove and whether he would have to uninstall IE7 for IE8 in the last few days. If he was asking about that, then hell no he should be advising you on what to do from your HijackThis log. Only trained people or experts can read HijackThis log.

Go to bleepingcomputer and get real experts to look at it.

smss.exe is a legitimate Windows system file and because smss.exe is in the correct location seeing from your HijackThis log, that smss.exe is fine. Please don't attempt to follow the Kaspersky link at all because that is for that person's problem and that link was dated 3 years ago and if you look at the thread that person sent the file off to Kaspersky Lab for analysis.

the registry of your operating system needs to clean, This type of problem occurs when registry is overloaded with irrelevant information and corrupted files so it is necessary to clean and fix the errors, this can be done manually but depends if you have some know how to sort out the corrupted files, or use PC optimizer registry repairer software like Reginout

Did a search on this in the Hijack this log....click on the above link for further explanation....

C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe

It seems this is a Rootkit Virus infection....

Do this....run a scan with both of these FREE utilities..

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html

When the scan is finished quarentine anything it finds.......

Then Delete the objects found on both Malwarebytes and Super anti-spyware.....then re-boot your computer....

If the message pop - up again.....go to CNet.com dowloads and download the Free Rootkit Remover.......

This is going to take some time so be patient.........Est time of scan and repairs 1 hr 10 min
