Hi there,

If you could provide additional info by listing the malicious filenames it would help us to recognise what exact infection you have fallen victim to.

In the meantime, I would recommend downloading and installing the free trial of Prevx1. This is used regularly to remove many malware infections where other security apps fail.

Along with the increasing interconnectedness of our computers, the sophistication of the software we use and the speed of the hardware comes increasing threats from a malicious type of software -- the virus. There is no question that everyone needs to protect their computers from viruses, but can it be done without spending lots of money to buy anti-virus software and spending even more money in yearly subscription fees to keep the software up-to-date? In a word, yes!

There are a number of things you can do for free to keep your computer safe from viruses. We will get to the free software and services that are available shortly, but first a few tips on safe computing that you should follow even with good automated anti-virus protection.

* Stay Up-to-date: This not only applies to your anti-virus software, but also your operating system, browser and email client.

# Most viruses take advantage of known security problems in your computer’s software. There is almost always a patch available for the software before viruses appear on the scene that take advantage of the vulnerabilities. If you use Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, Windows Update and Office Update respectively provide an easy way to keep up-to-date with security patches.

# Use Common Sense: This may sound harsh, but most virus infections wouldn’t happen if the computer user would think about what they are doing and use a little common sense. If you get a strange looking email message delete it instead of opening it to satisfy your curiosity. If a message, even a normal looking one, has an attachment you were not expecting to receive, don’t click on it to see what it is. Much of the secret to safe computing is smart computing.

Even a paid for major anti-virus software is unable to delete a lot of viruses. Instead you boot in safe mode, run a scan and back up the registry. Then you have to go into the registry and edit it which is difficult even for super experienced users. So I doubt anything free is going to really helpful.

The best way to go is what someone else said. Reformat and wipe your computer. Either use the disks if you have them but most computers have it built in. You hit one of the "f" keys (which depends on the brand) when booting up.

You computer will be as fresh as the day you brought it home.

Download the following five programs:

1) CCleaner does an excellent job cleaning up temporary internet files, cookies, temp files, recycle bin, and prefetch folder.

2) If you don't have an antivirus program, EITHER AVG and Avast -- only install ONE.

3) Hitman Pro will let you automatically install, update, and run in Safe Mode many of the best free and free-to-try antispyware programs all with one click, including Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE, SpywareBlaster, Ewido, and free trials of Webroot Spysweeper and PCTools SpywareDoctor. The free version of Spybot Search & Destroy allows autoupdates, but Hitman Pro helps in keeping the others up to date with one click.

4) Winsockfix which is used to fix your internet connectivity if cleaning up malware breaks your internet connection.

5) Hijackthis which catalogs the places programs (both legitimate and malicious) are usually found, so that an expert can tell you if there's anything nasty remaining.

First, run CCleaner to clean out temporary files. In the Advanced section only check off "Old Prefetch data". Then click on Issues and scan for issues. Have it fix them all and make backups in case something gets erased that shouldn't (although I've never had problems with CCleaner's issue fixes). Then Scan for issues again until you get "No issues found". Then click on Tools and uninstall programs you don't want, and while in Tools click on Startup to remove things you don't want starting automatically. If you're unsure what you need to keep you can google for advice or email me with your questions.

Then update your antivirus program and then reboot into Safe Mode to run a full scan, then reboot after cleaning up what it found.

Then run Hitman Pro with the Safe Mode box checked. Reboot after cleaning up what it found.

Now run Hijackthis with the "Scan and Save Logfile" button, and email me the hijackthis.log, and I can advise you if there's any malware still there.

If your internet connection isn't working after removing malware, run Winsockfix.

It could be because you may have a virus or spyware installed on your PC. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

If problem persists, we could look at your hijackthis log to check the bad entries present.
