I recently bought a Toshiba laptop(Windows7, 64bit). It has a 30 days trial version of norton internet security software. I would like to download a free security software after my trial version expires. My old computer Dell (windows xp) has Avg free version, Malware bytes anti malware and Cc leaner. My Dell works great and i do not have any problem. My question is - Can I download Avg free version, Malware bytes anti malware and Cc leaner for my new Toshiba laptop(windows7 64 bit home edition). Is any one know this configuration works well in Windows7. Please suggest me or you can suggest some great security software for my PC. Thanks in advance.

Both AVG and AVAST are good. However, If I would use free antivirus, I would go for Microsoft Security Essentials, as they do not play "upgrade to get full protection" game. Personally, I use ESET Smart Security and I am happy with it. Kaspersky is good too.

By coincidence, I recently bought a Toshiba Win7 64 bit laptop myself. Here is what I did.

I removed all the "trial" software. This includes Windows office, the security suite and several annoying Toshiba programs and an annoying store program (ryhmes with guest guy). I did not even open the "free software" packages that I also received from the store. Most of which was nagware and trialware I didn't want or need.

Download a copy of DOSbox. This is for any really old 16 bit DOS programs you may want to run. I'm still looking into some other options for 16 bit programs and some of my old compilers and a ton of programs I wrote myself. I still haven't decided on a Windows 16 bit emulator should I need one. The compatibility modes do not allow 16 bit and Microsoft didn't make one for the home edition of Win7. I may still try and load Win98 or maybe even WinXP in an emulator or virtual machine if I really need win16 compatibility. There is a few good virtual machines and emulators so no problems there.

Download AVG free. This works fine for anti-virus. No problems at all.

Download Zonealarm free. One of the best if not the best software firewall. This also installed and works fine. Be sure Windows firewall is off. This is for public wifi etc. since it is a laptop and portable. At home you probably have an NAT hardware firewall.

Download a copy of Open Office. This replaces the Microsoft office suite. The differences are mostly minor and the compatibility with Microsoft Office is pretty good. The MS Office trial is a really bad deal. Buy the full packaged version of MS Office if you really need total compatibility and you get 3 installs rather than just the one trial conversion for about the same price. Micro$oft strikes again.

You could use Microsoft Security Essentials, but I have a lot of trouble trusting Microsoft with any security. Other programs do at least as good if not better and are easier to configure and use.

For anything else, look for Win7 64 bit compatibility. This is important for drivers and any programs that affect the operating system. For the most part, everything I've installed works without complaint except for the few cases where I have 16 bit programs or DLL's. Any 32 bit programs will run in 32 bit mode and are stored in a special 32 bit program files folder.

I still have a lot of work to do before I'll be happy with my computer. Right now if anyone asked how I liked it, the computer is fine. I'm still removing the trash software from it though. I had to do pretty much the same thing with my last laptop purchase and any other brand would come with similar problems. I still need to get a 64 bit Live Linux distro for it and try some of my favorite 32 bit distros.

AV wise ... (not counting NOD32 .. .which ISN'T free .. just FYI) .... I would go with Avira or Avast ... AVG gets lower rankings consistently ....Avast and Avira go back and forth for the #1 free AV ... I have both installed in different machines I have and they both work great

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are a few tips to help secure your computer at least somewhat ... .I am not saying non of these programs do

not have false-alarms or you'll be 100% protected all the time.. These are just a few tips

Anti-viruses -

There are many different review sites and many different opinions... I recently saw in the current PCWorld Magazine a rating of free antiviruses ... I have to say I think its pretty accurate ... Not sure if they rated AVG... but if it was (the ratings were 1 to 5 ... best to worst) than AVG would be #6 (in other-wards, not even on the list)

1) Avast - ( http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download ) I have to say on my 8year old laptop it was really sluggish but on my @ 1 and 1/2 year old Toshiba with Windows7, it is a-ok .... Very Good Detection Too

2) Avira - ( http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus ) This is what I have on my old laptop and what I had (Trying Avast on my new Toshiba ATM) on my new PC before trying Avast.... I love Avira and even if I am using Avast ... I still recommend Avira 100% ... Detection only slightly behind Avast ... they deducted "points" for the fact they like Avast's Interface better

3) MS SE - I have to say I don't trust MS, but I have to given in and say all the reviews are very positive .. I don't like how it forces you to have windows updates on "download and install automatically" .. or right out of the "box"/"gate"/whatever .. I had to install 60MB of updates ON top of the I think it was 12MB for the Anti-virus itself ... but for newbies that really don't like Avast, or Avira for whatever reason ... It's a decent choice.. with the exception of one test that rated 50% detection and Avira rated 70%, MS SE is on par with Avira Detection wise .... Did MS finally get something right?... If they slim down there database and let you change the Windows Update settings when MS SE is install... I'd say 100% yes

Those are all Free, but if you feel the need to want to pay for one (for whatever reason), try Eset NOD32 ... its the only non-free antivirus I recommend and it didn't even lag my older systems

Firewall -

I would recommend Comodo's Firewall 100% and also if you do not like Comodo for whatever reason, Outpost makes a great firewall product and they have a free or pro version available. Both of them (Comodo or Outpost)are easy to use and configure

Malware/Spyware related -

The only two products I would recommend are both freeware and the best at what they do. MalwareBytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ ) -(a must have in my opinion), and SuperAntispyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com/)

maybe the only other addition would be Spyware Blaster

Honestly, the other scanners are not worth it.... even the freeware scanners are not really worth it if you ask me.

the only component you quite want is an anti-virus answer. ESET NOD32 is the final anti-virus answer there is. this isn't a private opinion, this is consistent with autonomous sorting out and assessment, accomplished via AV Comparatives, an agency that's across the international acknowledged via risk-free practices experts international, inclusive of myself. They carry out month-to-month tests and for a while now ESET NOD32 leaves all its opposition in the back of. ESET NOD32 isn't high priced, besides the shown fact that it is not freed from value. in case you do no longer want to spend any money on an anti-virus answer and you would be able to settle for under the final, then use a freed from value anti-virus answer via AVG, Avast or Avira to illustrate. As for inner maximum firewall application, there are various incorrect concepts going around. own firewall application isn't mandatory to guard your computing device against incoming community site visitors. Your computing device will purely settle for connections to centers which you host. in case you do no longer host any centers, there may be no incoming community site visitors to boot popular possibility loose internet site visitors. own firewall application may be effective in blocking off outgoing community site visitors. in case you have an endemic to illustrate which tries to hook up with the internet, a private firewall could have the means to dam it. yet this implies that in the beginning you will already be contaminated with an endemic and 2d of all it particularly is extremely probably that the virus will then have tampered along with your very own firewall application to boot if it controlled to get on your computing device interior the 1st place.
