You will need a key recovery program. I was going to advise you Magical Jelly Bean but the free version does not do it. It is a shame as it was recommended by a PC magazine. Here are two free alternatives:
1) KeyFinder Thing 3.1.6: http://download.freewarefiles.com/files/keyfinderthing3.zip
2) Enchanted keyfinder: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ekeyfinder/files/v0.1%20Beta/EKeyfinder_v0.1beta7_win32.zip/download?_test=goal or http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/project/ekeyfinder/v0.1%20Beta/EKeyfinder_v0.1beta7_win32.zip
Piece of advice, next time, tell your boyfriend to write it so it will be easier to spot it later. Also note that some cheap Office 2010 license works only for one computer. Some which are more expensive, for three. I suspect yours only works for one. You could try to repair it instead. Maybe it will do the trick.

[UPDATE] You can get Microsoft Office 2010 again or you can get a free alternative instead:
1. Open Office: http://www.openoffice.org/ or Open Office with added addl. features: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=170021
2. IBM Lotus Symphony 1.3 (Registration is compulsory and limited features) https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/reg/pick.do?source=swg-normandy&S_PKG=win_en&S_TACT=104CBW71
3. Libre Office: http://www.libreoffice.org/download
4. http://www.ssuitesoft.com/ssuiteexcalibur.htm (I loved that one except it created false positives with my antivirus).
5. Google Docs which is a cloud suite (online): http://docs.google.com/
