Im running windows XP. Since Sept 3 09 my computer has not been able to install the updates from microsoft. I have been using email support from microsoft support staff. I have tried everything they suggested so far and it has not worked. Really I'm not a computer wizz. Question: I'm using Mozilla Firefox as my internet browser do I need to worry about these updates? Also when windows 7 is release would it be worth the upgrade? (maybe problem solved).
I tired uninstalling AVG and installing updates didn't work. I have IE browser installed I use that to go to the update page that didn't work . I ran MRT no infected files. I also tired about 20 things from microsoft no luck.
Using IE I tried to get the updates one at time starting with the first on the list. I downloaded the update, click run , click I agree. Then I get a SETUP ERROR the directory or file cannot be created

Copy and paste this into notepad.

net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuapi.dll /s

regsvr32 wups.dll /s

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s

regsvr32 wucltui.dll /s

regsvr32 MSXML3.dll /s

regsvr32 qmgr.dll /s

regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll /s

net start wuauserv

exit

then save as, file name > xxxx.cmd > file type > select all files

now exit from notepad and find the .cmd file you just made and double click on it and run it.

restart the computer then go to windows updates and see if it now works.

if this don't make sense then Email me.

If you use the internet which you obviously do then yes it is necessary to install Windows Updates as 99% of the updates are security based that stop potential threats from gaining control of your computer and stealing personal information or spreading viruses. If your computer has slowed down try downloading a few programs that look for spyware/ad-aware etc etc, do a virus scan and try defragmenting your hard drive, theres lots of reasons why a computer may be running slow and a quick search on Yahoo ;-) or any other search engine *cough* Google *cough* will help you find ways to speed your computer up.

Run full scans not quick ones to do a complete job on all internet protection programs. You have to be care full with what commands you enter when trying to to create and new directory and the windows update service may need to be shut down when doing so but by all means make sure you are only following instructions that a apply to your error code. You may just be able to do system restore to a point in time when your windows update was working ok without following any complicated instructions as a easy way out. Sometimes it works sometimes not but worth a try.
