Question:
I accidentally deleted .sys files, and I'm wondering if there's a way to recover them without reformatting.

I downloaded Avast! Anti-Virus, and after the installation process, it asks to restart the computer. I do so, and when it restarts, it starts a scan of the computer to find corrupted/infected files and whatnot, and the files that it found were .sys files. I then went to delete them... I now realize that I should have either moved or repaired them. Is there anything I can do to get them back without losing all my precious mp3s (aka reformatting)?

of course...do the following:

first off put the windows disk in the drive then goto:

start>run

type in the field: sfc/ scannow (u better copy/paste this)

then wait for windows to repair the corrupted files...it will take about 10 mins.

hmm.

short answer- borrow/buy back up hard drive and copy your files to this. Then reformat.

long answer- write down all names of missing files. Search internet for locations of folders they should be in. You may need to tell windows to show hidden files/extensions etc. Internet will show you how to do this.

when you know the names of the folders use windows explorer to find them eg open C drive then open Windows folder etc or use search function. when you have found folders get your windows installation disk and find the missing .sys files. then just copy and paste them to their proper folders on the pc. Restart the pc and hey presto should solve problem.

Formatting is the best option though, pcs pick up so much crap surfing the web, its the best anti virus protection there is.

Did you ever consider the thought that they *might* just have been un-important if you are able to post here still. Heck they may have even been viruses in disguise. If everything still works, just keep doing.... whatever it is you do.

Also check the recycle bin if they were important and try Recuva(google it), just don't do much or they will be written over. Download recuva onto another drive or thumbdrive and install it there. then just scan the drive and restore any .sys files.

If you can back up your mp3 on a cd or a USB then reformat, or if you have windows vista, turn on your computer, then on the bios screen, press f8 several times until advanced booting options show up. select repair computer. then select english, then select the user name with adminitrator rights, then a windows will come up and select automatically repair computer. it will fix the .sys files without losing any data. If you have XP, try using a system restore point, or back up all your mp3s and reformat.
