my computer works fine, but sometimes a command prompt opens with the file name c:/xxut.exe. it started after i signed in on msn yesterday and it appears like 2 or 3 times every hour. and when i close it, the end now screen appears, and when i press end now, it says that windows cannot end the operation it may need more time to complete. what is this file? is it harmful? i ran malwarebytes and it says that there are no infections.

First off, do you have an anti-virus or adware removal? If you do not, try Spy bot - Search & Destroy (you can google it and find it from there.)

Usually it means the file is missing or whatever is trying to look for xxut.exe cannot find it. I recommend scanning your computer first with your anti-virus and then with your adware removal program.

If this is still an issue, I usually recommend HijackThis (you can also google for this), but you would have to be very good at recognizing what the programs are when this program completes its search.

Well, Malwarebytes is a good scanner, but it's not the panacea for all things. Try running Combo Fix if Malwarebytes cannot remove it.

No doubt that is a virus... Find and install NOD32, and than see what he says... (Be sure that you've updated virus database) If there's nothing, than you should reinstall your OS (XP, Vista). Reinstalling your OS is the only sure and best way to delete all kinda virus from your system.

If you decide to reinstall your OS, be sure that you backed up all your important data from C partition (Program Files, Desktop, My Documents)

Maybe some kind of virus... scan that file on virustotal.com.. if you found it to be a virus, end the process in task manager and then delete it..

Maybe it's a badly written virus, or a batch virus that can't be picked up by an antivirus program.

In any case, delete the xxut.exe and scan your system.

Path on hard drive is missing or corrupt. running malware and antivrus is just waste of your time. you may need to run restore disk to correct issue

That sounds like a virus!

I recommend you download avast! antivirus from www.avast.com and do a boot scan.
