AVG 2012 is old. Go for AVG 2013.

Now with different look and strong features.

That's something you should have questioned before actually buying it.

Pros

Scored very well in malware cleanup and blocking tests, also in independent lab tests. Little impact on performance. Antispam blocked no valid mail. New AVG Accelerator speeds YouTube, Download.com. Integrates other AVG tools.

Cons

Firewall's program control is old-fashioned. Malware could programmatically disable firewall. Antispam missed nearly half of spam. Phishing protection weak in testing.

Bottom Line

Performance tests showed this suite has only a small impact on system performance, and its antivirus protection is very good. However, the other suite components don't measure up to the antivirus, which you can obtain for free as a standalone product.

In recent years, AVG has branched out a bit from its antivirus and security suiteorigins. The company now offers PC cleanup, top-notch parental control, and online backup. AVG designers also continue to tune and improve their core security technology, the latest example of which is AVG Internet Security 2012 ($54.99, direct; $68.99 for three licenses). Not all of the suite's components come up to the high standard of the antivirus component, however.

You were right to get rid of mse, see this article:

Now, on to avg....No, it is not that great of an AV program. While for 2013 their virus definitions database has improved, it is the only tool it uses to protect a computer, and in today's malware world, that is not enough to protect a computer.

Since you already paid for it, you should use it until the license expires, but I would also get MalwareBytes pro to help protect your computer. It is only 25 dollars U.S. for a lifetime license.

When your license expires, you should get one of these AV programs, they are the top AV products, and score very high in testing every year.

BitDefender.

GData.

Kaspersky.

You won't go wrong with any of those, and with MalwareBytes pro, you will have excellent protection.

Good luck.

I used Microsoft Security Essentials and got tons of viruses. I switched to AVG Free edition and have never had a virus since.

AVG is good, but Avast is a better option. It's more prompt and doesn't let any intensity of virus creep into your system.

I think so yes. I have been using the free version of AVG on three computers for several years and I have always found it to be highly effective. :)

That's something you should have questioned before actually buying it. Now it's up to you to measure whether or not it was a good decision. Personally I still use MSE and have had absolutely no trouble ever since I started using it.

According to me it is good.

One thing is very important you have to update it regularly for the more security.
