How can I get rid of a virus that my anti virus software cant seem to remove?
?
2009-09-22 21:19:53 UTC
As of today my computer has been infected with something. So far the only noticeable things are programs not wanting to open and any link i click on, such as a search result from google will take me to some spam site. It only works if i type a url in the address bar. I have malwarebytes anti software which has never let me down but it says "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. you may not have the appropriate admissions to access the item" when i try to click it. then i downloaded superantispyware, ran a scan, rebooted and that message was displayed again. i'm running windows xp also if that means anything. any help is really appreciated

You should try using MSCONFIG in Windows XP to disable some of the unnecessary programs that automatically load on start-up. Disabling these programs will help your computer boot faster and crash less.

1. In Windows XP, go to Start > Run

2. Type MSCONFIG in the "Open:" box and then either press enter on your keyboard or click on the OK button.

3. This launches Microsoft's System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right).

4. This takes you to a page with a list of "startup items." Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.

Remember, disable only those programs that you recognize and don't need to have running all the time. When in doubt, leave it on.

5. Click on the OK button.

6. A message will pop up telling you that you must restart your computer before these changes will take effect. Click on "Yes" and your computer will automatically reboot.

7. That's it! Your computer should now boot faster and crash less.

And you should also update our Antivirus software and run a virus scan,

You can run antivirus and antispyware programs, but the sad fact is if you have found one virus on your computer, you probably have several. Cleaning the computer now requires you to follow these steps, because modern viruses and spyware entrench themselves in files that your computer needs in order to run:

1. Virus-check your data files (not application files-- you have installer CDs for those).

2. Back up the data files, getting them off your hard drive.

3. Get your original operating system CDs that came with your computer.

4. Boot your computer from the operating system CD.

5. Select the option that erases your hard drive and then reinstall your system software.

6. Turn on your software firewall that came with your operating system.

7. Reconnect to the internet, and download *all* Windows updates, no matter how long it takes.

8. Reinstall your application software, and update the applications as much as you can.

9. Reinstall your data files.

10. Create a limited user account on your system that does *not* have administrator access, and web surf only from this account.

Yes, this is a pain in the butt. No, there is no other way. No, antivirus and antispyware programs cannot fix this problem on its own.

So, what do you do in the future?

1. Never click on links you find in an e-mail.

2. Never open an e-mail attachment, ever.

3. Only download files from a reputable website that you know is on the up-and-up.

4. Never use bit-torrent and other file-sharing programs.

5. Never use an unsolicited drive-checking site.

6. Turn off all java and java scripting by default, and only enable java and java scripting for sites that you know you can trust.

7. Never read an unsolicited e-mail, and delete spam immediately. It is possible to be hacked by reading an e-mail alone.

Please adhere to the 'dont's' I provided above, because you will have to repeat the cleaning steps that I listed first *every time you get infected.* Anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are good to have, but they are a second line of defense. The best way to protect your system is you, and changing your behavior.

Good luck!

Malwarebytes is good for removing malware. Good for a standby. It does not protect your computer.

You need an anti virus and a firewall to go with it. An anti virus will tell you what you have.

The below might work.

Running malwarebytes in safe mode gets you away from what ever you have.

close out all programs

turn computer off

restart

right away press the F8 button

once every second

select safe mode

press enter key

select your system

hit enter

click start button on left

all programs

cruise to malwarebytes

scan

delete

close out

RESTART If this does not work

There are free ones in here also free firewalls.

Without an anti virus this will come back.

A firewall will keep hackers out.

Easy to use FREE curing utility to clean your computer infected with viruses and various unwanted codes by the Dr.Web Anti-virus updated once or several times an hour.

This is a FREE anti-virus and anti-spyware utility based on Dr.Web Anti-virus scanner, which will help you quickly scan and cure, if necessary, a computer operated by MS Windows 95OSR2/ 98/Me/NT 4.0/2000/XP/2003/2008/Vista/7 without installation of the Dr.Web Anti-virus..The utility contains the most up-to-date add-ons to the Dr.Web virus databases going up to twice per hour frequency at periods of high malware submissions.

Dr.Web CureIt! detects and removes

* Rootkits * Mass-mailing worms * E-mail viruses * Peer-to-peer viruses * Internet worms * File viruses * Trojans * Stealth viruses* Polymorphic viruses * Bodiless viruses * Macro viruses * MS Office viruses * Script viruses * Spyware * Spybots * Password stealers * Keyloggers* Paid Dialers * Adware * Riskware* Hacktools * Backdoors * Joke programs * Malicious scripts * Other malware* . Download Dr.Web CureIt! from our website. Run the utility and press the "Start" button in the opened window. Confirm the launch by pressing the "OK" button and wait for the scanning results of the main memory and startup files. If you want to scan all or just some drives of a computer, select the Complete scan or the Custom scan mode (in the latter case, select the necessary objects you want to scan) and press the "Start scanning" button on the scanner right.

When you call the utility, you can specify parameters for the scanner in the command line, i.e. to specify the objects for scanning or/and modify the scanning modes different from the default ones.

When being scanned, infected files are cured, incurable files are moved to the quarantine directory. When the scanning is finished, the log file and the quarantine are not deleted. This utility can quickly clean an infected system, but it is not a permanent tool to cure your computer in case of infection. Its distribution on our web-site is always armed with the hottest add-ons to the Dr.Web virus database, but it does not include the Dr.Web Automatic Updating utility. Dr.Web CureIt! stays actual until the next release of the add-on. To scan your computer with the most up-to-date Dr.Web virus databases next time you should download new Dr.Web CureIt! package http://www.freedrweb.com/download+cureit/

Your at a point now where you need something strong. You need combofix. Here is the point your at, Your infected, Everything you have tried ain't working. So, the only thing left to do is reformat/reload windows. OR, Run Combo fix. Combo fix will find and delete your infections. BUT' Depending on how bad your system files have been corrupted by the virus/mal ware you may in the end wind up reloading windows. So by running combo fix you stand to lose nothing.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix…

Download it update it,run it. It will clean all the infections off your machine. It's very strong. But you may get lucky. It just depends on how bad your system files are damaged. When it gets through cleaning your machine if you notice any weird behavior from your PC pop in the disk that came with the computer and restore your files. When you restore files you are not doing a full reformat/reload of windows. Your just replacing files. If none of this works then you have tried. Reformat/reload windows.
