I've heard a free application called Peer Guardian can help keep my computer from hackers and malicious viruses when surfing the web. Anybody have experience with using this application?

Their purpose is to help protect the user's privacy from organizations such as the RIAA and MPAA while using filesharing networks such as FastTrack and protocols such as BitTorrent[citation needed]. The system is also capable of blocking advertising, spyware, government and educational ranges, depending upon user preferences.

I have been using it. But I doubt it is effective for stopping spyware. Apart from PeerGuardian I have Norton Internet Security and Spyware Doctor. Only peer guardian doesnot help in my opinion

Two anti-virus programs might cause problems with your computer. Most anti-virus programs have a firewall installed. If your anti-virus doesn't have a firewall, then try getting a firewall installed on your computer. Check my website out I have so many recommended programs.
