Question:
anti-virus for ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)?
2009-11-30 18:40:24 UTC
i just switched to ubuntu from windows xp about a week ago and im very impressed with it.
i switched because my computer was way to slow on xp and most of the problem was the anti-virus.
my mom insists i get an anti-virus but i dont feel it necessary. my biggest concern is finding a anti-virus that wont slow down my computer is there a descent anti-virus that fits that or do they all slow the computer down.

if its not even worth an anti-virus please tell me so and provide a link or an explanation why so i can convince my mom to get one.
thank you

Antivirus software is not essential on Ubuntu however there is an option called ClamAV

I believe ClamAV can be found in the Ubuntu 9.10 repositories

You're running Linux. It's not even worth getting antivirus for Linux. Any virus would need super user access to do anything and there are only about 100 known Linux viruses in existance. Linux will almost never get a virus.

No anti virus program needed.

There are only 100 known linux viruses or so, and they can't spread really..without you fighting to get them.

Your system is build on permissions and user accepts..even if you got an virus it wouldn't register your machine.

So the only thing you should be concerned about, would be sharing with windows computers...as viruses gotten to ur system might register their machines.

cant explain it

I own Linux-Ducks yahoo Group. Malware is not rampant on Linux - but that was true for Windows back to year 2003 and earlier. See it ? The more users the more malware... just the blood greed of it all like an incurable fever. (cyber criminal underground).
