Windows IP address conflict detected?

My laptop showed an error message saying that there's an IP address conflict saying there's another device on my network with the same IP address. I'm unsure if I should be concerned or not. I have heard of other people having this issue due to having a PS3 or some sort of system on their network or it could be somebody hacking to monitor what I'm doing. I'm hoping it's just because of my PS3 or the Wii since both are hooked up to the same network as my laptop... I don't really know what to do right now. Does anybody have any advice?

The commonest reason is just that a device has been on a different WiFi network and been allocated an IP address by another router.

Occasionally with devices that switch the WiFi to standby mode or have 'sleep' modes, when they wake up again they may nor immediately detect they are on a different WiFi network.

I get it with my laptop between two sites I work at, and I know other people get the same thing occasionally.

As long as turning the PC/Device WiFi off for a few seconds (so it has to restart and get a new address) cures the problem, it's nothing to worry about.

If it does it regardless, then it appears someone has set static IP addresses overlapping the DHCP pool on the router. These should always be separate - eg. have static addresses from x.x.x.10 upwards, and the DHCP pool from x.x.x.100 - 199 or whatever.

A simple test. Start unplugging these devices until the alert stops.

Has anyone tried to change the IP addresses in the router? I've seen some people that for some reason want to create their own IP address scheme. With problems. A good router will assign an IP address based on the MAC address of each device. And ALL devices have a different MAC address. What has changed?

Has anyone been into the router and tried MAC address spoofing? This will cause your problem.

Your laptop should have its adapter settings on 'automatic', and your router should have DHCP enabled. The router assigns IP address to devices on the network automatically when DHCP is enabled. You can disable DHCP and assign a static IP address to you devices but that's a pain.

But just for fun, try this free network scanner and see who is on your network:
