Please be as specific as possible and if you can provide a link that goes to a easy to follow faq on the matter. I am not trying to hide so that I can do anything wrong, jut getting tired of nuts coming after my computer, with hacking attacks. It is getting ridiculous. Oh and I have a high speed connection if that makes a difference. Already have firewall, but would rather that they not be able to follow me home as it where. I am a complete newbie at this, so go easy.

Thank you.

Search around for a proxy server....I suggest one you pay for, not a free one. I have said it before; it is a tough idea to get through your head to pay for something like this when it is all over the internet for free.

The free ones are crap. I pay like $9 or $10 a month for mine, but I feel much safer against hacking attempts. I didn't want to pay at first either, but eventually I had to buck up and do it. A few less Coronas now but I won't have to buy a new PC because it was attacked.

I feel like I say this a lot when I answer proxy questions but you need to use up to 9 free web proxies to be anonymous. This means when you find a proxy you like, you have to use that proxy to go to another proxy, and so on. Then your ninth one you can finally type in your destination. It sucks!

Also, being a newbie a pay one would be in your advantage because everything is basically done for you. The one I use has a little box once you turn it on and that's it. You use your IE or Firefox (I think those are the only two supported, but I use Firefox...which you should also get if you are concerned with safety).

I've never had to contact the company but people I know who use their software have for various reasons and told me they are very friendly and helpful....I also found the FAQ section on their website for you to take a look at. It has some general FAQ about internet privacy as well as more specific questions about the proxy.

I mean everyone will be telling you which one they prefer to use so I will try to help by directing you in the same path I went. Be sure to do research first before you decide on something.

The best thing you can do is have a Anti-Virus always running. (AVG or McAfee)

Have a firewall running. (ZoneAlarm, McAfee)

If you already have these go to your settings in your firewall and go to privacy/security and there should be a tab to set your firewall to. They are usually set on Medium. Change them to high or secure and this makes you almost invisible(They usually say that when you drag the button to high.) When you access programs it might be more of a pain, but in the long run you will eventually get all your programs working with your firewall and won't have to worry about it and shouldn't have to worry about hackers.

Hook up a router and enable security and DHCP on it. It will assign a private IP address to your machine. Users will only see the IP address of your router (which will be your internet IP address from your provider) and not your private IP. This should keep the basic hackers out of your machine.

This doesn't help of course if your machine has a virus or spyware since it will send your internal information out to others. A software firewall makes it harder for them to attack your machine (since you will have to give specific permission for programs to send information to the internet) but you should use virus protection as well as spyware protection to prevent that.

each and every internet site you pass to notes your IP address. in case you have been traveling Australia and logged onto this internet site whilst in Australia, you may immediately be directed to Yahoo! Australia because of the fact Yahoo! knows straight away the place you're
