Woah, I am so glad I finally decided to google, and found this question after uninstalling and reinstalling AVG over and over, cleaning files, bugfixing pc, defragging etc etc lol.

I thought I was losing it and had somehow got my PC infected despite never doing so (other than tracking cookies) in over 20 years lol.

Good to see none of us lost our marbles, our PC's are fine and AVG techys just need to wake up and get to work lol.

Hmm...very interesting! I don't have your answer, BUT I just got the same error. Right now. I have been spending my day getting rid of a Trojan virus. Finally got my computer clean, so I went to do a update. I was afraid it was due to some of the removing I did. Anyway, when I did, it gave me the same thing you got. I wonder if this is just an error on their side? I don't know for sure, obviously. I did a Google search just now to see if I could find some info. That's how I came across your post. The overview shows everything else to be running just fine. Just the Update Manager is screwy. I'll be keeping a close eye, and if it's not an AVG error, then we'll see what others say.

EDIT: I see another person is having the same problem. I'd say it's possible it's on AVG's end. If you look, in the overview, everything else seems to be working. So I assume we're still protected. We just can't do an update yet.

2ND EDIT: Thanks White!

Hey, Don't worry about anything, I just have the same problem. All AVG users are. It's just kind of like a bug, or the update is missing some files. The best recommended thing I suggest you should do is nothing. You might mess up AVG, and waste your time. They will probably update this soon. Your Antivirus and Spyware protection and all those stuff will still be working properly, so you shouldn't worry. The bad thing is you will have the ! on your grayish AVG icon. If you do not trust me you can search 'bin file missing' on Yahoo! Answers. You can see a list of questions exactly like yours posted somewhere 6 hrs, 7 hrs, 5 hrs ago, or somewhere today. It is just a false update made by grisoft. Just be patient and it'll be updated, and everything will be working properly again. Good Luck! Kevin Don't worry!

If any of you are having problems updating and get "missing bin.file". here is the fix for it.

1) go to http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update

2) make a directory (file) on your desktop called AVG

3) download AVI: 270.6.4

4) download IAVI: / 1616

5) move the dowloaded files to the directory you made called AVG

6) launch AVG

7) select tools -> update from directory

select the directory called AVG where you put the downloads

That's it. Should be fixed.

It's true!

1- This have nothing to do with the system, and reinstalling is no good.

2- It originates from the AVG soft itself.

3- To overcome this SIMPLY:

(I came across the same problem but got it sorted.)

1 - Start up AVG,click Update Now.

2 - The list of updates is shown in Popup, click on the more information link.A list of updates will be shown.

3 - Click on and save all updates in a file except the last one - http://downloadfree.avg.com/update/u7iavi1616oo.bin - because this is causing the problem.

4 - Cancel the update and instead click on Tools > Update from Directory and go to the file where you saved the updates.Install these and AVG should be working properly again.

i also have wasted time and energy stressing about this damn bin file.

I uninstalled the avg and then went to their website and reinstalled it off that, to no avail i might add. I was just searching for what a bin file was when i came across this section. thank god for google ah?

I read that avg were aware of the problem and were in the middle of fixing it so to just wait it out. Then i read that we shouldn't uninstall and reinstall as it wipes some other thing out, so now i am really stressing as i have done just that!!!

Oh i hope they fix it soon, i live on the internet

Don't worry! You don't have to system restore, or uninstall AVG. The problem is on AVG's end. You can either wait until it's fixed and get the update, or you can go to AVG's website, and download the FIRST update released today, not the second one. You can't get the second one anyway. Update AVG from a "directory" and your protection will be back. Then wait until they get their update fixed. Doing this will at least stop AVG from yelling at you about it not being protected. Hope this helps.

It' s true that it works, but...It states clearly ' for users of free AVG not to update from these updates', but instead go to (another place they show). I did not check that out. I did what said the guy who said "it works it's true" and it was true. So let us check now whether we have messed up the AVG 8 with updates for the AVG 7.5. By the way, AVG 7.5 was perfect as it perfomed in Safe Mode ( that is, when you press F8 as you restart the PC and choose to enter that way, where most viruses and malwares are 'handtied' and VISIBLE), but the 7.5 started saying it would no longer update after June, so I changed to the free AVG 8.

Any way, back to the main issue, when they say ' fot free AVG users' the fail to specify of which version, as both 7.5 and 8 are free!

You can go to free.avg.com and manually download the latest anti-virus and anti-spyware updates in a .bin file format (I recommend you download it to your avg directory) and then install the updates from directory (under the tools option menu in the avg control panel).

That should solve the update issue until avg fixes the issue of looking for a .bin file that isn't there. And yes, it's on their end... I've just finishing reinstalling avg and repairing it twice to be certain its on their end. As soon as they fix the bug, we'll see a program update to download which should make the headache go away.

Thank you so much for the advice, my avg is now working. I followed the advice of downloading the file released today, saved it in avg program folder (though you could save it on desktop too)..then went to avg and 'updated from directory'.

I don't have your answer on how to fix it or where is the bin file, but I have the same issue what you have today. It happened today. So, I think it is AVG end missing a bin file. We have the same **** problem with different toilet. I hope AVG wipe this **** up and flush it soon.

Don't reinstall AVG free, it sets your databases to an obsolete status of July 2008, just wait til AVG fixes the problem.

"Currently the update for AVG Free v8 is corrupted... you will have to wait for AVG Technologies to address the issue with the update.

Reporting the issue again by other users here will not do any good util it is resolved.

The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is setup to detect. In otherwords, just getting this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time.

So in short... please do not post to report the issue, its already known. Also please be patient until AVG Technologies can address the issue.

Also... for those user that did report the issue... thanks for the info."

Yup, seems like a wide spread problem. Happened to me too. stupid .bin file b.s. Everyone just chill out and wait for avg to fix the problem. If you must hunt for porn now, take that dudes advice and get avg 7.5 from that website he mentioned.

Go to www.oldversion.com and download AVG Anti-Virus 7.5.441 This is an old version of the program. If the new version has 'bugs' you can just revert to an old version until the bugs are fixed.

Oldversion.com has many other older versions of programs that you can use for free....but I would recommend giving a donation so they can keep the website maintained.

Problem solved, it is working now. I have just gone to update & the problem has been resolved.

I didn't do anything bar wait patiently for AVG to sort their prob out. So don't worry about uninstall/reinstalling & wasting download space etc. ;-P

that error is actually for the link itself which is missing. For you to have a better understanding, i suggest you go directly to their website and download the update manually. You are most likely going to get an error "File not found"

In other words, it's problem on AVG's link.
