It's about where the user accounts are kept...domain users are users that are entered into the domain users group on a domain controller...objects in active directory. Operating systems that support domains..such as Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional...can log into a "domain"..and allow these users desktop access...and access to network resources. These domain users can be centrally managed at the server.

Once a machine is set to log into a domain..it usually is never logged in locally again.

When you log into a local account, you are using the user database built into your computer.

A domain account is authenticated by your computer talking to a server called a Domain Controller to make sure that the username and password are good, but your computer wouldn't be a domain member unless it was part of a corporate network. In a corporate network, this allows centralization of user management and configuration.
