All of these are free and i use them and have done for some time, many of which I also recommend to resolve specific problems. They all have low resource usage, and my machine is kept free of viruses and malware apart from those that iI deliberately import to ensure that the programs do as the vendors claim:

Nod32 is good from what i heard.I guess for free avast home edition works well. But for the dough go for Kapersky. As for your last question look at other options other than some antivirus.Too many people believe they are safe. The best way is to get a good firewall Comodo.Put it in stealth mode.

That makes you invisible.Get yourself a vulnerability scanner. That will check your system and determine what exploits you may have.

Also make sure windows file extensions are not set as default.Hopefully with professional windows finally got it right.I highly recommend that you look at this page.Notice how when this was found,It was back in 2000,And windows is likely still using this setting??? dumbfounded.

Let's narrow the choices down for you:

~* Free anti virus options*~

Avast! is a nice anti virus. I've heard that many people enjoy using it. There is also AVG anti virus. I used that for awhile and it was good, but I found a better free anti virus called Avira AntiVir. The only thing that may bother you about the anti virus is the fact that it updates A LOT. It pops up a lot, but the updates are normally very quick, usually less than 5 minutes depending on the update. Avira AntiVir found more viruses than AVG ever did on my computer.

~* Paid Anti Virus Option*~

I will warn you against some paid anti viruses, such as Norton Anti Virus and McAfee Anti Virus. I have used both. Norton is a major system resource hog, meaning it slows down your computer by a lot. McAfee just gave me more problems then it seemed to solve.Kaspersky seems to be a very good anti virus.

Good luck!

If you've got an older computer, I would definately say "Go with AVG". It's free and works pretty well. It also takes up about half the memory all the other virus programs do. For best results, pair it up with ZoneAlarm firewall.

If your computer is beefier, you may want to go with McAfee. I've been using it for 2 years on my gaming PC, works very well. However, it is EXTREMELY memory-hungry and takes up a lot of RAM.
