Question:
Access Denied - Recycler/Recycler/autorun.exe on external hardrive via USB connection?

Hi,

I was recently made aware of a virus on my computer and had to upgrade my virus checker to remove it. I upgraded to Norton 360. After completing a full and lengthy virus check on my PC/external drives and when accessing the drive via My computer, I now get the message "Access Denied" when I try to double click on my external hard drive (the HD is connected to the PC via USB). However, when I right click the drive and select the second "open" option on the drop down menu, I can access the drive and all that is stored on it. (The first bolded open option also advises "access denied")

Given this has only started occuring since upgrading and running the new virus checker, can I really have a virus/worm as I am seeing suggested in other posts? The virus checker advises the computer is now clean.

My IT knowledge is limited but any assistance (in simple terms) on how I could correct this error would be appreicated.

Many thanks,

Paula.

hmm... try to do this.

open your windows explorer

>Tools>Folder Options>

Click the View Tab

Look for "Hidden Files and Folders"

Click "Show Hidden Files and Folders" radio button

There are 3 checkboxes under it..

UnCheck ->Hide protected operating system files (recommended)

Now the Final Part

In the Address bar of your explorer,

type the drive that points to your usb drive

i.e E:

it should open

Look for the Recycler (recycle bin icon)

and the Autorun.inf

then Delete it!

That should solve the problem.

Hope this helps!

Paula,

I do not know what you are referring to when you say you have drop down boxes and bold options..

so I am going to start with your topic.. which mentions recycler\autorun.exe denied

A) Having an executable file in a recycle bin that is denied leads me to believe that that file is infected... which is why you are being denied access.

B) You should be able to right-click on the recycle bin and empty out any files (assuming they are not infected in which case your antivirus should take care of it unless it cannot... in which case you should attempt to remove it manually in safe mode).

C) If you are unable to click on the drive icon and go into the drive at all.. then your drive is infected... you should probably make a call to Symantec (Norton technical support) and have them walk you through this issue... because without being there you may take someone's advice that will infect you more... either that or find a reliable technician in your area who can come over and troubleshoot the problem.

Having your access denied and only installing antivirus after the fact does not mean it is all gone... and it does not mean that your files will all be intact (like cutting out cancer in someone's brain would not necessarily leave the brain in working condition)..

You can also try going to the symantec.com website and running their online antivirus and security scanner to see if it picks up something your installation is not. Upgrading was definitely the right move.. it may just be too late for this windows installation.

Good Luck

It sounds as in case you have taken the oldpersistent out and linked it via way of an exterior enclosure, then tried to get right of entry to the my information folder. in spite of in case you have set the debts up precisely an identical the recent workstation could have some diverse info and think of it relatively is an unauthorised account. attempt moving the information via copying to a cd/dvd, in the different case look on the folder permissions.
