I would agree with toontje, and I don't know why people give thumbs down on sound advice just to promote some crap like AVG.

AVG has been, and still is causing major problems for many users, up to V7.5 not bad, but now they have removed the separate anti-rootkit and anti-spyware and added it into V8 but only if you pay for it, conflicts with ZoneAlarm, SP3 on XP, will not regularly update on some systems and more:

http://cotojo.wordpress.com/2008/05/27/avg-antivirus-v8-problems/

Avast is far superior, better realtime protection and a lot more. Also make use of Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Install only one AV but also make use of online scanners from time to time.

I also disagree with statements that 'you get what you pay for' as free AV / Anti-malware programs use the same definition files as they do in the paid for versions, they can do this in the hope that users will upgrade from free to paid, but with the right combination you can get excellent protection with low resources at no cost.

Plenty of tried and tested programs that are free here:

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK

Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:

Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.

Then begin by;

delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.

goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions

goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.

Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.

Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.

Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.

Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.

Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:

dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories

Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

Here's a complete FREE internet Security Suite.

First you must uninstall any other anti-virus programs you may have.

Then:

Install Anti-Virus Program

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

After installation it will restart and perform a scan.

All infected files = move to chest

Next install Anti-Spyware Program

http://www.superantispyware.com/

Once installed right click on the icon and click 'scan for spyware, adware malware'

Do the full scan. It will show you a list of infections found. Just follow the instructions to quarantine the infected files.

I had to perform this scan about 4 times before it said 'no infections detected'

(You will need to reboot after each scan. The full scan takes some time so be patient!)

Next if you don't have a firewall then download

http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

To protect your computer from getting infected with malware in the first place download the following 2 programs:-

SpywareBlaster helps to immunize your computer against certain selected malware-

These days you need a whole lot more than just a virus protection. Only about 15% of all malware is viruses. The rest is worms, trojans, phishing schemes, spyware, etc.

Here's some ideas to make Internet Security Suite (securitycenter) for free. Free is always the best.

For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 Anti Virus ...You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict...(did I mention that you MUST uninstall any old anti-virus products?)

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avast. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources.

Download here:

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Avoid an anti-virus called AVG (free version). It is wildly popular but has poor virus detection rates.

====

For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............(use at least 1 anti-spyware, but 2 is OK). Do a scan with it on a regular basis.

SUPERAntiSpyware:

http://www.superantispyware.com/

===

For your Firewall..........(Always use only 1 software firewall)

A decent free firewall is Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.21.329.

It is one of the few free firewalls that will work (and work well) on Vista as well as XP and 2000.

http://www.comodo.com/

====

And to help protect your computer from ever getting infected with malware in the first place............ (use them both)

SpywareBlaster helps to immunize your computer again certain selected malware.:

SiteAdvisor warns you when visiting a potentionally malicious web-site:

And always keep your Windows and all your installed software 100% updated and patched with all critical and security updates from the vendors THIS IS A MUST! In Internet Explorer just click Tools then Windows Updates.

Here is a little online (no download) security tool called The Secunia Software Inspector, that checks a computer for un-secure, un-updated and un-patched apps that may be installed on your computer.

The Secunia Software Inspector checks for possibly vulnerable programs like Adobe, Winamp, Java, Windows, Internet Explorer etc. and notifies if critical security updates are needed. !

Pretty cool and free at:

What are Powered by Zedo and URL.CPVFEED.COM Popups?

I consider myself a pretty good spyware removal expert, but I ALMOST was stumped the other day when a customer's computer was infected with these strange "Powered by Zedo" ad popups. They would popup in the middle of the screen without warning usually when I was trying to search Google or another search engine. Then they would take my search term and put it in the popup ad showing Ebay or a few other sites.

The javascript that was producing the popups had several ad networks that it was using including

12) Click the plus next to Services

13) Find the folder called CORE and right-click on it and choose Delete

*** WARNING *** If the folder CORE does not exist, dont do anything

14) Close the Registry Editor by clicking on the X in the right-hand corner of the window

15) Reboot your computer in Normal mode

16) Once the computer is rebooted, open your web browser and go to Kaspersky Online Scanner by clicking on the link below.
