In short your connection is being redirected to a different server and the connection is being made from there. It's not really bypassing but transferring the link some where else. Unfortunatley some of those connections can be traced back too the originating server provided you are still connected. I won't explain this.

A proxy server is a way for you to access the internet without giving away your location (IP address basically) because it sends data to a server which then accesses the internet.



Bypassing it means you do give away your IP address.

You should assume that they are NOT secure. That's why proxies are routinely blocked on school and business networks. There are plenty of rogue "proxies" that are nothing more than information traps for clueless users whose only purpose is identity theft.
