Use only one software firewall.

This is what a Microsoft MVP has to say about the subject. You may also want to consider reading her entire web-page on "How to prevent Malware". It is one of the best that I have seen.

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

"Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously! The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time. Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown."

A decent free firewall is PC Tools Firewall Plus. One can either choose "Normal User Mode" Or "Expert User Mode"'depending on the detail of alerts and application custom rules desired.

It is one of the few free firewalls that will work (and work well) on Vista as well as XP and 2000.

Good luck.

much less severe priced is an previous device with an iptables firewall (eg. a Linux distro like IPcop). it is greater helpful is debatable. I lean in direction of the Linux device, commonly by fact it incredibly is in many situations greater handy to patch interior the form that a vulnerability is located and in many situations such patches are available till now than maximum proprietary hardware suggestions. additionally, it incredibly is simpler and configurable (has very almost infinite valuable properties) and you at the instant are not caught with waiting on a employer to maintain up as much as now. some desire hardware firewalls as they may well be a splash easier to enforce. you are able to still argue that a proprietary hardware answer is greater shelter by fact the source code is secret, yet it incredibly is extremely debated or has been. A hardware firewall may well be greater ideal for top bandwidth purposes because it could help larger throughput counting on its layout and what laptop this is while in comparison with. A firewall could be a separate device in spite of everything. A computer firewall or purely working iptables or the like on a similar device used as a server or computer isn't as shelter and could in basic terms be achieved as properly to a dedicated firewall. Edit: maximum client routers do not incorporate firewalls, at appropriate countless could be evaluate pseudo-firewalls. additionally, it incredibly is on the marketplace to attack a private community that sits at the back of a NAT router.

2 things happen when u have more then one firewall active

1: ur more protected

2: it slows down ur system a bit having to run both firewalls.

also i should note that if u run into a problem with a online program not working, fixing it to work with more then 1 firewall can get very tedious very quickly.

well the only other firewall type program i can think of would be AVG. it's good and alot of people use it.

once i had two firewalls turned on at once, my computer got screwed up, the firewalls basically cancel each other out so they don't work.

what you need, is a good firewall, and a virus protection and then set your defualts on your firewall not to block the antivirus program and you'll be set.

uhh you'd be more protected but it'd be hell for your computer and to allow firewall exceptions and btw commodo is the best
