Before you get carried away, I'm going to suggest three things:

1) Uninstall AVG.

You can only have one real-time antivirus installed, and Avast is the one of the two that you should keep.

Use the AVG Remover from the AVG site to *completely* remove AVG.

> AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities

2) Download and update the free versions of Superantispyware (SAS) and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM), and run a full system scan with SAS and a *quick* scan with MBAM; and let them remove what they find.

> Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com

> Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

3) You should now be able to install Avast.

If not, then use Avast's Uninstaller from their home site to uninstall it, then reinstall it.

> Avast Uninstall Utility: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

If the above fails, then go ahead and take drastic measures - reformat and reinstall WIndows.

You cannot install antivirus software if any antivirus software is already on your machine (there are exceptions).

Try installing a free uninstaller, like REVO (free from www.download.com). Run it and uninstall any software you think is an antivirus plus anything that is junk or unwanted.

Then get some spyware utilities (like SPYBOT and AD-Aware - also free from download.com). Run them (both) and get all your spyware removed.

Then try to install the free version of AVG (free from d.c) because AVAST has had problems recently.

If all that fails post again stating you've done all that but, IMHO, that should fix almost all problems.

In any case you MUST be running a Firewall (try Zone-Alarm), an Anti-Virus and some kind of spyware blocker. Even with those 3 resident (ie: loaded and running) you will still need to scan your hard drive regularly for virus's and spyware.

Lastly you should probably run some cleanup / performance enhancement tools like Wise Disk Cleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner (again free from d.c) at least monthly.

Sounds like you could still have a virus affecting your system. Presumably you had a major problem before you did the rinstall. Try downloading and running malwarebytes. See if it finds anything.
