How did my daughter steal all this stuff?

My daughter admitted that when she was 15, she and her friend stole loads of stuff. She's now just turned 17, she told me because she felt guilty. It was too late for her to give the product back to the stores, so we agreed she would earn the money back and give it to charity. But heres the question, how on earth did she steal things like this, without getting caught...

because she said she just picked this up and left the store, is this possible? Could she have got caught and not told me :S. Surely this would set off alarms etc.

That said I know people (they do security tests for a living) that have managed to walk out of stores like wal-mart or other retailers with a case of beer or ps3's without ever being checked. While I don't know their secret it is very possible and apparently easy...
