Data Execution Prevention?

I keep getting popups on my laptop (which runs on XP) that say Data Execution Prevention with a message saying "To help protect your computer, WIndows has cloed this program"

sounds like a virus or spyware, but i just ran a scan on my comp w/ spyware terminator (which detects viruses too) & deleted everything it told me to, so what else should i do?

DEP does not allow some exes to run because they might look suspicious, good protection from viruses.



You can disable it and add programs that are allowed to run by going to:



Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenence > System - under Advanced tab, under Performance click settings, then click the Data Execution Prevention tab.

Look if you are going to use freeware and crapware as your security suite then you are probably not very protected and probably shouldn't trust the results...



Try running a web based scan from someplace reliable like http://housecall65.trendmicro.com



Then consider investing in a proper security suite (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc) from a reliable vendor (like mcafee or something) and keep it properly configured and completely up to date.



You may also want to ensure you have run windows updates and do so regularly.



DEP is a function that is designed to protect core system files from malware. It would certainly help to know what program DEP is closing... that might give you a clue as to what other crapware you've installed that could be causing the problem.
