Question:
Will shutting down explorer.exe make my personal files safer form hackers?
2010-01-08 16:26:59 UTC
We know we can run iexplore.exe without explorer.exe running

Again. So if I'm browsing online, regardless of the browser, can a hacker view my files if my PC's explorer.exe is shut down? Or does it just make it harder.

Note: My logic leans towards the fact that I am able to view my files if I shut down explorer.exe

Does this make sense?

It truly depends on the hacker's skill level. New and beginning hackers may have difficulty determining the location of your files. This does not apply to experienced hackers or hackers with an assisting program. They are able to remotely start programs and copy files; usually without your consent.

N.B: You are still able to open files without the graphical Windows Explorer (explorer.exe)

Yes I imagine it would help. lol

Go for it! open the task manager and kill the explorer process and watch what happens. You sure won't have access to your files either. At least not until you manually shut it down and turn it back on.
