As long as you download it from a reputable site you shouldn't have any problems. I just downloaded the newest version myself, with no problems.

Java has been around for years - it's sometimes used as a 'plug-in' by other software. So long as you trust the actual site you're getting the download from - you should be safe.

Norton & Defender should pick up anything harmful.

Java is a programming language, Used by developer's to develop Software and Web sites. So its all around you! All the time.

It is only as bad as the programmer who wrote the scipt. Always use common sense if it LOOKS DODGY it probably is!

It is safe. Trusted by Jagex and other game sites.

Java allows you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D, just to name a few. It's also integral to the intranet applications and other e-business solutions that are the foundation of corporate computing.

As long as you download it from their site directly it's fine. Java is a pretty major piece of software, so as long as the site you download it from it from isn't seedy you're fine.
