Id recommend to wipe the computer clean and get a new version of windows 7 directly from microsoft and install that. Once you accomplish that, youve started with a clean slate. Antivirus programs slow down your computer. Then dont accept any updates and stay off the internet or at least away from porn or anywhere frowned upon. I dont believe there is a such thing as a program that is virus or hack proof. every building has an entrance and every entrance can serve as an exit or way through. Viruses are the least of your worries this day in age and you can always reformat it and start over. use flash drives for storage as backup so your loss is minimal, plus the less you have the better and faster it will run.

There is no single antivirus that will protect you from everything.. same as there is no single potion that treats everything...

if you want to be safe you will need to:

1, get a good antivirus (i recommend AVG or Kaspersky, rumor has it Avast is good)

2. get an anti malware (Malware bytes excells here, you will need to know how to use it..

3. DON'T download everything you see.. designate a PC for on-the-go downloads, keep important stuff on a PC of it's own..

4. don't mix work with play... espcially that 99% of cracked games are virused and many can cause problems with heavey duty work

5. protect your files using either encncryption methods or win7 permission or both incase of a virus sneaking in

Congrats on your purchase! While I always suggest getting Norton, Avast, and such are best for protecting your new purchase.

However, I've run Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy on all of the computers I own, and they're great, free antivirus systems.

Just do some research on what a particular piece of antivirus software protects you from, watch what you download, and I personally suggest running your main antivirus in conjunction with Malwarebytes.

I would rank antivirus like

#1 Kaspersky (Antivirus only )

#2 BitDefender

Being in computer repair since 18 years, mostly virus/malware/spy ware infected computer has Nortons, McAfee, Avast, Comodo, Trend Micro or CA Antivirus.

Stay away from free downloads and unknown emails, you would be fine.couple of more tips to stay safe

1. DON"T use Internet explorer, stay with chrom or firefox

2. Ones computer is already infected, never try to install antivirus without manually cleaning the computer first.

3. Desktops and Laptops are not made to stay on 24/7, at lease ones a day shut them down properly to refresh assorted storage media and CPU.

4. Keep java and Flash upto date.

5. Never ever install any toolbars

First thing, download free any Antivirus Software and Malwarebytes. After that you have at least some protection so as you explore the other suggestions, you're fairly safe. Then create your restore and backup disks so if you get infected again so badly you can start over fresh. I take it you don't have those resources for your old infected computer you had to replace, and if you did have them you could have repaired the damage. Last, be careful where you browse; porn sites are the best place to get infected. "Friends" also forwarding funny threads will set you up so when the Trojans start going around, you aren't thinking twice before opening them and getting zapped. Hover on addresses when one is suspicious and see in the balloon if there are strange characters or even if the address is spoofed. Be careful about browsing site news and trivia. Those can be infected and zap you. The internet is a very bad neighborhood, and everybody gets mugged from time to time. Be always ready to get your computer fixed.

There are no great free programs to protect your computer. They don't protect your computer fully, as they are free and the creators don't really care since they're not getting paid. Also, free programs (depending on who it's made by, can download keyloggers onto your system, tracking everything you click on and registering what keys you press (which can be dangerous if you're putting in credit card numbers online, or have online accounts that require passwords). A PC can either be a desktop or a laptop. You only have two choices when it comes to systems (PC or Mac). Since you have Dell (which is a PC), it makes no differences in the answers. Anyway, back to your original question. The only program I have used is Norton Anti-virus 360. I am extremely satisfied with it and have only had to buy 2 laptops (I had to buy a replacement because I dropped my first laptop down the stairs, shattering it into pieces). It's $59 a year (that's what I pay because I share it with my sister and mom to use on their computers). Trust me, this is the best!

If you have Windows 7 as Trevor suggested, then I would use MSE and Malwarebytes. MSE will protect most surface items and if anything does get past that, Malwarebytes will go ahead and find it (I recommend always running a Threat Scan). From the systems I have worked on over several years of I.T. work, I have noticed that McAfee, Norton, AVG, and Avast are rather poor choices for security; several times that have not detected anything after a scan that Malwarebytes soon picked up after the initial starting phase. Always attempt to discover a free anti-virus before investing too heavily.

Personally, I would recommend Kapersky (as it was used at University. If it did not work, they would not use it.) or VIPRE (Utilized during High School as the District protection; quite reliable.)

Once that is complete and it shows you a list of PuPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) go to the button that says "Quarantine All". Then proceed to the "History" tab and "Delete All"; it may require a restart.

As Paracha mentioned, I would use Firefox or Chrome in "Private" or "Incognito Mode" as they: Do not track your browsing, Do not keep a record of your search history, and it clears your cache and cookies (provided you do not have it set to "Always remember/Accept").

If you can download Adblock Plus for Firefox/Chrome, or both if you have it, then do so; it helps quite a bit in removing unwanted Facebook side-of-page ads and those annoying ads before YouTube videos.

Honestly, as long as you never use Internet Explorer and avoid "those sites", your system should be fine. Just watch out for the occasional spam mail, run a scan at least once a week (or more depending on how heavily your browsing is), and never donate money to the Nigerian Prince; there never was a lottery.

I've been on the net since 2000, have had 3 computers and a laptop since then. I can tell you that the simplest way to run a pc (desktop) is to buy the warehouse start-up cd's from the start so that when your computer gets too much gunk in it you simply reinstall all those cd's and your pc is good as new again.

You're always going to get malware and an occasional trojan but just use those cd's and start all over and you're good to go.

The best way to run your computer is that if you're typing letters or saving pictures or information from the net then save it immediately to a stick flash drive (buy one, they hold lots of docs and pics) so that your pc will remain clean.

And, do NOT use your pc to do online banking, don't check your balance, don't buy from your accounts, don't use your credit cards online. That way you can run smooth, fast, without any additional checking or cleaning off your pc and you'll save yourself from ID theft thru the computer.

Yes, what we tell you for desktops and for laptops are the same.

If you have the warehouse cd's for your initial desktop you can pull off all your documents and pictures and then run those cd's and start all over again and your computer will be clean again, so you'd have two ways to get on the internet.

Do as I suggested and you'll save yourself thousands of dollars plus time.

You don't need an antivirus. The more stuff you put on the computer the slower it gets. If you're going to invest in anything then try Kaspersky's.

There are 2 Antivirus programs that I use. I use Malwarebites and Super AntiSpyware. The free versions of these are perfectly fine, but you just need to get in the habit of updating them and performing manual scans. The main thing that one person can do to protect their computer from harm is be aware of what is downloaded and what you are downloading. Simply searching up the safety of some sites can increase you safety of viruses. You can go into the control panel on programs and google suspicious programs that may be in need of removal. Good Luck!

I have nis 2014. Had a problem today. Firewall blocking internet connection. Went to support online chat. Guy took remote access of my computer fixed the problem I can run full system scan in 20 minutes. Also its light when running. If you would like to use something else. Then Kaspersky is the way to go. Make sure you remove the trial antivirus on your computer with there removal tool. Don't just just add or delete. Find the tool for avg removal online. online.

The best full-featured antiviruses currently are Avira, BitDefender, and Kaspersky.  In recurring tests, Microsoft Security Essentials (renamed "Windows Defender" in Windows 8) has consistently placed among the very worst for protection.

Free versions of Avira and BitDefender are available.

Prior to installing any antivirus, install the free version of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM), update its database, and perform a "Threat Scan".  This should eliminate any malware that would interfere with the antivirus installation or functionality.

Rescan the MBAM every two to six weeks, depending on your level of Internet activity.

AV-Test.org said of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware —

"In the test group of 10 antivirus software packages, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free achieved an absolutely flawless performance. The software detected all the test samples, neutralized all active components, deleted superfluous data and thus repaired all the damage. After all 60 test scenarios, the antivirus application consistently rendered the Windows system absolutely clean. AV-TEST honored this performance with the BEST REPAIR 2014 AWARD."

Bitdefender is a beast all in one antivirus and this year bitdefender showed they can make a good and easy to use interface. I personally recommend bitdefender also considering they have some useful functions as bitdefender wallet.

For those facing problems with costumer support, i understand as bitdefender lab is not good at support. You should try to get support from another company or a standalone tech. For a few problems you can use the help interface of bitdefender to search for a few not too complex ways to solve problems. As sometimes the problem is greater than the help tab can explain, the support fails.

ill make it simple I have been fixing computers for 10 years (my strongest skill is malware removal and protection ) and I would never suggest any of the following nortan MacAfee tred micro avg reason being is they are all very popular with computer manufactures witch means when hackers write there malware they write it to bypass those av programs

so what I would suggest would mainly depend on what you plan on doing with the pc but in general these would be my recommendations

paid

bit defender (anti virus + internet security or total security) 30-80$ a year for 3 pcs's this includes an initial scan during install to help clean up your old pc

kaspsersky

for free versions I suggest

comodo anti virus or internet security

avast

now I know you said you don't like malwarebytes the trick is when it finds infections is to Google them If you don't know what they are ( sad thing is malware bytes and bit defender cannot be on the same pc it will cause issues ) but I use malware bytes at work to remove malware at least once a week a

another great one is superantispyware

I use superantispyware as a back up to my bit defender

as far as ms security its maid to be a secondary av to work with your main av so its not very good at detection or removing things its ok to have but I personally don't use it or find it necessary

Don't get WEbROOT!!! I bought the Best Buy yearly service and they suggested I buy Webroot and I have never had more problems in 22 years of using a computer.

And every time I use Best Buy to clear problems I get left with more useless files. This time my favorites list is filled with all .dll files I'm afraid to delete.

I really didn't need the Best Buy contract my neighbor talked me into it two years ago. and they keep trying to fix the last guy's problem.

I got Norton with Comcast and it was flawless for three years before Webroot. AM going back when this contract runs out.

My Answer might sound crazy, but I blindly recommend Avira Antivirus which is a freeware like other programs like BitDefender, Avast etc.

Avira has this user-friendly interface. When you have an Internet connection, Avira is seriously a charm!

You need to keep the program updated to all the virus definitions day by day everyday. It can get updated if you keep your laptop connected to internet once in a day everyday or you can manually update the Virus Definitions. If you update the program and scan the system atleast once in a week, I'm telling you, You will love Avira and its performance.

Far better than paid softwares... You should try it and use it in a better way for a better delivery of performance.

i dont know so much about antivirus. i have a dell inspiron 3521. till before 1 month,i was using avast antivirus.i scanned it very well all the day. it shows no threat found. but the laptop periodically began to become slow. so i uninstalled avast and installed eset nod antivirus. then i scanned it. the result! my eyes were popped out. because that antivirus found out 13 virus from my laptop. from these 13, 10 of them were automatically cleaned by the software. the other 3 were big virus. i deleted that three files from my pc. now its very fast.

i dont recommand avast. thats just useless. i updated it during intervals. it wont do anything. but eset is so good.

so i recomand you ESET NOD antivius.

I would suggest getting Kaspersky full security, spybot search and destroy and Malwarebytes. Frist you need to start off with going in to Kaspersky and search for holes in your system which it is called a vulnerability can so you can fix all the software that leaves holes in your system. only use malwarebytes when something some how gets by which if it dose it would be your fault. next run spybot and immunize your web browsers. so all the hole in them will be fixed. get rid of useless tool bars stay off of those sites ; ) and use the virutual keybord that kaspersky gives you to log in to sites. just be smart and you will never have a virus

ESET. It's less expensive than most of the more popular brands but it hasn't missed anything yet (knock on wood). Hackers write viruses to get past specific antivirus programs. Getting past Nortons ups their rep. ESET is out of Czechoslovakia so nobody's writing "against" them, yet anyway. They update frequently, don't tie up alot of resources and they have a free 30 day trial.
Anonymous

I recommend McAfee LiveSafe 2015. However, the problems with Malwarebytes are most likely because you viewed the list of detection and used Windows Explorer to delete them. Windows Explorer does not really erase deleted files from your hard drive. Therefore, malicious software may know it's deleted and cause further damage to your computer, including data loss. I recommend you quarantine detection via Malwarebytes rather than deleting via Windows Explorer.

John

Avast. Malwarebytes is a good addition as well since it's NEVER deleted or destroyed valuable files on anyone's computer (so that couldn't possibly have been the source of your "destruction of programming" (whatever that means)). I'd be willing to bet it was operator error. Did you ever update your AVG or Malwarebytes?

To be honest iv had my laptop for 9 years and have not got a single virus and it hadn't slowed a bit and iv never had virus protection software its a waste of money. But it all depends on what you surf the web for...... honestly all of them do the same job, its viruses that evolve or find ways around them. if i were you i would learn about how people acquire them instead, like for example when CLICKING ADS, you get adware, OPENING SPAM MAIL just because it says something interesting, DOWNLOADING applications from public sites like cnet or others that get money from not just advertising but actually giving you some sort of software included in your download. im not saying avoid those sites entirely, im saying be cautious of what you are downloading if it comes with something else jus decline and find another source. best tip for downloading something is go to the product's official website.

viruses dont just sneak in, you did something that let it in so once again learn about how ppl acquire them. YOU learning how to avoid viruses together with ANY realtime protection/antivirus would be your computer's best defense.

and by the way i havent had a virus in years and its because what happened to you happened to me. experience is the best teacher

I'm sorry to say that if your previous PC had issues, even though you had protection running, then you are the problem and your lack of understanding of the dangers. NO anti this or that will protect you from yourself, so you need to address that specific problem first, by learning what not to do. Try the AskLeo website as a starter in the right direction.

Regards, Ian.

After reading what you had on your old pc, it seemed like you had both at the same time. Never put two anti-virus programs on your computer at the same time. It is the same as having two ex-gf living with you, nothing but trouble. MSE or AVG will be adequate but supplement with malwarebytes and super anti-spyware. Be sure to back up often and be ready to recover your computer if things go south.

I use AVG free edition have since 2001 since both Norton and Mcafee slow down computer a lot and AVG cathces more viruses for free than paying for a virus scanner.

ever since it found viruses that Symantec Enterprise Edition missed, I always use the very free Microsoft Security Essentials. 5 years running and it has never let me down on the many, many computers i have installed it on.

I take it you don't have those resources for your old infected computer you had to replace, and if you did have them you could have repaired the damage. Last, be careful where you browse; porn sites are the best place to get infected.

I use the Free Version of AVG. But you must know this. AVG is only an ANTI-Virus Program and not all bad things are a Virus. you can get infected with ADware and AVG will not stop it.

You need more that just one program.

I also use Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy and if I do get infected with adware I use ADW-Cleaner.

I recommend Symantec Anti-Virus and Malwarebytes.

Symantec for viruses and Malwarebytes for malware.

You can run both without conflict and without loosing much resources (RAM).

REMEMBER! You get what YOU pay for!
