Limewire is perfectly legal but the materials being shared are not.
Music, movies, software are illegal to share given that the makers don't get a single cent from shared items. The movie and music industry tries to stop this practice but it's like trying to stop a tidal wave, too many users in to many countries. Just because Limewire is legal doesn't mean you can be careless and not have a software preventing DNS port check by people hired by the movies and music industry to track you down.

The software is legal.
However, using it to upload or download copyrighted files (music, films, etc) is illegal.
When you download Limewire, they make you agree to a statement saying that you won't download copyrighted material.
You can share non-copyright material on Limewire all you like, but that's not what most people use it for.

Limewire is legal.
Making songs available for download is not illegal. See Elektra v. Barker where the RIAA lost on those grounds.
However downloading songs marked with a copyright flag is illegal in the US.
The largest danger though is virus/trojan/spyware that can come with either illegal or legal content. Mp3 files cannot infect your computer with a virus, but executable files that you download can.
If you want to download content, I would recommend getting on a private bittorent tracker. People who upload trojans and virii are banned pretty quick keeping it safe. Also ratio requirements keep feds out because they would have to break the law to participate.
It's like a gun. Not illegal to own (in most cases) but it's illegal to use it for the wrong purpose or in the wrong place.

Limewire itself is legal. It is actually made for peer to peer transfers...Like say I right a document and need to let someone else get it. THen I can transfer it. Downloading movies and music that is copyrighted is not.

sharing uncopyrighted software or files is totally legal, but if you share copyrighted stuff, that is illegal.

Limewire is legal until you download illegal stuff BUT DONT GET IT ITS THE BIGGEST VIRUS EVER! My computer got totally destroyed so I sent it in when i picked it up the guy told me the whole problem was caused by limewire sooo dont get it.

The software itself is legal, sort of like the knife is legal; but your action of killing sb. with the knife is illegal. So if you just up/down load non-copyrighted material, that's totally legal.
In addition, the software has a statement which asks you not to transfer copyrighted materials.

No. Any software that allows you to illegally pirate software, music, and movies is certainly illegal as well. It only takes so long for the FBI to shut them down.
Also the majority of the software found on limewire is infested with virii not to mention the program itself is infested with spyware.
It's best to avoid it at all costs and learn how to use newsgroups.

It is legal as long as your not stealing software. I.E- OS's Windows xp, vista, mac osx leoaporad, or something that someone else had to pay for that you do not have to.

Well it depends what you do...if you download songs with copyright protection it's sort of illegal...definitely don't distribute them anyways.
It's full of viruses too. I never use it anymore.
