Yes, you do need a firewall.

The purpose of a firewall is to prevent unauthorized connections between other computers and your computer or network. Linux PCs are as much of a target for this type of attack as any other.

Ubuntu online firewall documentation and instructions can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/firewall.html

Linux has a Firewall built into the Kernel that loads at runlevel 3 (that is before the OS itself loads). You can use IPtables, which is installed by default, to configure the firewall.

If you want a different GUI Firewall program (will help you configure the IPtables), you can try Firestarter: http://www.fs-security.com/

But if you learn how to edit the IPtables it becomes very flexible and powerful.

What distro of linux? Are you running a distro? Yes it always better to set up a Firewall. Ubuntu comes with one, but it by default off. I believe Opensuse comes with it on. Fedora i believe you have to install it. Etc.

i'm a Mac person, and sorry, i've got not got a clue in the event that they're going to paintings on a Mac (lol). yet, probable no longer as no longer very many video games paintings on Macs - or are available for Mac OS X. i might advise a Mac because of the fact i think of it is much less complicated to apply - all your shortcuts to the programmes are on the dock on the backside of the reveal so which you do no longer ought to flow via enormous stupid menus attempting to discover some thing. you may placed homestead windows onto a Mac using the programme stated as "Parallels computers" - it expenses around £50/£60, yet you will possibly ought to purchase yet another reproduction of homestead windows XP/Vista etc for it to paintings. no longer attempting to be ageist, yet once you're mum and dad are previous - except they are very technical, i do no longer think of they had be responsive to the way all of it works because of the fact it is form of complicated. Linux - nicely, infrequently any video games are available for that. i might say carry on with homestead windows XP - and probably a clean pc? because of the fact homestead windows Vista seems a techniques too complicated to apply - even for me lol, and, the comparable is going for homestead windows 7. Macs are extremely common to apply and boot up interior of a minute, however the video games probable won't paintings. you may get video games for Mac from shops and the Apple save & Apple save internet site, yet they are limited. usual, i might say get a clean laptop/pc on homestead windows XP. I spose homestead windows 7 is okay, yet, i think of homestead windows XP is nice.

no need for firewall, but you can install if you want.

go to applications>software center>firestarter.

no need for anti virus too,

but if you will pass a windows application to another windows computer, you may need anti virus so you will transfer the virus from one windows to another.

using applications from linux software center and or applications for and from linux, no need for anti virus.

using linux is safe especially browsing websites.
