What are email providers and file sharing site owners doing to prevent illegal file sharing? Such as; music, pirated software, illegal images/video.

Do email providers try to find bad content in email attachments? And do file sharing sites check to see if there's anything illegal being shared?

Most of them don't do anything, and you should be very thankful for that. Would you want your e-mail provider to read your e-mails?! Most file-sharing sites don't check the content being shared, either.

By law, service providers have no obligation to check whether their users are using the service for doing anything illegal, and they can't be held liable for such illegal actions. However, they do need to respond to take-down notices filed by copyright holders, and must report illegal content if they know about it.

It is extremely rare for anyone to be punished for distributing copyrighted material without authorization. For things people actually care about (say, leaking government information), your odds of being caught and punished are much higher--an investigating agency can subpoena a service provider for access to your account.
