Okay recently I was downloading modifications for pc software, and I assumed since I have always downloaded modifications that it would be safe under most circumstances. Until recently, I was looking for some sort of gta mod installer tool for my vice city game, and point being; I downloaded a .rar file, and as soon as it finished downloading (note: before I even executed any file in there) my anti-virus software (nod32) detected a virus, and asked me if I wanted to delete the file, I clicked delete immediately.

So, my question is; would I be able to contract a computer virus from simply downloading an infected .rar file without even executing a file in it? Simply just having the .rar file open.

Also, are .rar files able to launch viruses?

The answer is NO...you need to either extract the file...which, be careful...includes moving it to another folder or extraction program. Your AV program, however, can scan your email and other unopened, or yet to be extracted, files/programs and give you a positive. that tells you to delete or quarantine the file.

So my "NO" comes with a caveat.

If you need help send me a message and I can help you clean it.

.exe files can be disguised as rar files.

your nod 32 found whatever was in there before you

executed the program inside so you will be ok.

Some virus are really powerful even if you just hover your mouse over them. :)

Sometimes, you don't even need to install it. It will install automatically on behalf of you. :)
